The Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEOR) said that attempts to revise the history of World War II, which it claims are being made in some of former Soviet republics, “will backfire”. ”We’ve been following the new ways of studying the history of World War II in the Ukraine with careful attention and a certain shock, given that different events in the sequence of searches for these new ways, varying in scope, amazingly combine to form a common problem”, Borukh Gorin, the head of FEOR’s Public Relations Department, told Interfax-Religion on Wednesday. The posthumous conferment of the Order of Hero of the Ukraine to Sturmbannführer {Nazi SS Major: editor} Roman Shukhevych, and the situation at an élite school in Kiev, where children were asked to find arguments in defence of Adolf Hitler, are “symptoms of a common and dangerous disease which is developing complications. It’s a very dangerous endeavour, not for Russia, or their other neighbours, or the Jewish communities in those countries, but, primarily, for these countries themselves, including their nomenklaturas. Attempts to whitewash or revise the horrendous role played by Hitler and Nazism in the 20th century will backfire, coming back to demolish those political blocs that launched them”, Mr Gorin said, urging the leadership in these countries to think wisely. Ukrainian media reported recently that students of the Pechersk International School in Kiev, most of them children of the most privileged families in the Ukraine, including the children of President Viktor Yushchenko, were asked as a home assignment to find 68 arguments in defence of Hitler. Reports also claimed that students of this school greet each other by raising their hand in a Nazi salute.
