The 13th International Musical Olympus Festival opens in St Petersburg on Sunday. This shall be the 13th time the festival shall unveil to the world a new generation of talented musicians, winners of a raft of prestigious competitions. Originally born here in Russia’s northern capital, the festival has since expanded its geography with sold-out concerts played in Moscow, Zürich, and New York.

“Our list of performers already exceeds 250 musicians, the future of Russian classical music”, said Irina Nikitina, the festival’s founder and artistic director. “What makes this event so special is that we unveil new names and guarantee exceptional performances, we break the vicious circle where the very same performers and orchestras move from one major festival to another. We want to show that there is much more to the music world than meets the eye and introduce a cadre of up-and-coming and potentially first-rate performers. There is one more, educational, side to our festival, because besides listening to gifted young musicians, people also hear new music by young composers and rarely played pieces, too, this year [we are presenting pieces] for rarely-heard solos for instruments like upright bass, trombone, and marimba…”

25 musicians from 16 countries are taking part in the Musical Olympus festival, to run from today until 2 June. They are all winners of prestigious competitions like the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, one in Zürich, and the ARD festival in Munich, to name just a few. This year, local concertgoers have a chance to enjoy a new piece by the young Spanish composer Miguel Gálvez-Taroncher, the winner of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth contest in Brussels. The rising stars shall play with the best orchestras at some of the city’s very best venues…
