Russian wrestlers enjoyed mixed success in the freestyle weight categories winning gold, silver, and bronze at the Beijing Olympics on Thursday. In the men’s 96 kilogrammes (212 pounds), Russia’s Shirvani Muradov, 23, beat Kazakhstan’s Taimuraz Tigiev 1-0, 1-0, in the final to win his first career Olympic gold. The bronze medal went to George Gogshelidze of Georgia and Khetag Gazyumov of Azerbaijan. In the super heavyweight final, Russia’s Bakhtiyar Akhmedov lost 0-3, 0-1 to defending Olympic champion Artur Taimazov of Uzbekistan to take the silver medal. Slovakia’s David Musulbes and Kazakhstan’s Marid Mutalimov took bronze in the 120 kilogrammes (265 pounds) event. Revazi Mindorashvili clinched Georgia’s second wrestling gold of the games beating Tajikstan’s Yusup Abdusalomov in the men’s freestyle 84 kilogrammes (185 pounds), while Russia’s Georgy Ketoev had to settle for bronze along with Taras Danko of the Ukraine. The Olympics wrestling competition ended with Russia grabbing the majority of medals taking 6 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze.
