I had an interesting communication from an unnamed priest… as you know, my policy is NEVER to name clergy; they are vulnerable to nastiness from such First Family paladins as Lyonyo Kishkovsky and Sasha Lebedeff. Supposedly, the recent OCA/ROCOR meeting was to smooth things over, to reassure people in the ROCOR who were skittish about the modernists in the OCA. If such was its rationale, it was an utter failure. Firstly, Bishop George Schaeffer should’ve rejected Lyonyo Kishkovsky and John Erickson as members outright, and he should’ve rejected the venue (it was a former ROCOR parish church stolen by the OCA during the Great Church War). To have Kishkovsky and Erickson as members of the OCA side spits in the face of all good Christians, both OCA and ROCOR. Kishkovsky was one of the most egregious warriors in the Church War (he was loudest of those spouting the Sov line), and he’s known for his extreme and unrepentant Renovationism. He was very nasty in the Mayfield contretemps, much more than he had to be. Erickson is the author of the Iliff coverup… I need say nothing more (that’s not to mention his crank scholarship, apologias for New Skete, and extreme Renovationism (he’s worse than Lyonyo, unbelievably)).
In short, it was like when President Obama suggested to President Medvedev that Vice President Biden go to Moscow as the US representative for the 2010 Victory Day celebration. President Medvedev made it very clear, very quickly… Biden was completely unacceptable due to his crankish and extreme Russophobia (President Obama had brains… he withdrew Biden’s name). This was the same situation. By accepting these nasty sorts, and by accepting the venue, the ROCOR side worked against itself (if the stated purpose was what it purported to be, which I don’t quite buy). Congratulations, this was a classic example of “preaching to the choir”. If the purpose was to calm jittery nerves amongst ROCOR parishioners, this was the WRONG way to do it, as it looked like a ROCOR capitulation to the worst (and most unrepentantly Renovationist) faction in the OCA. C’mon… Garklavs is a nasty sort, too. Everyone knows how he protects Bobby, Iggy, Karlgut, and the rest of that scurvy archpriestly crew.
Clergy get the respect that they earn… no more, no less. No cleric gets “automatic respect” for his “office”. That’s a papist notion. “A priest is a priest only when he is vested”… that’s the traditional Russian view. When a priest does liturgy, that’s one thing; when he opines after liturgy is over, that’s another. I’m now going to say something that’s really going to brown off the hyperclericalists, but it must be said. There was a reason why the commies were able to persecute the Church as they did, there were too many Lyonyo Kishkovskys, Sasha Lebedeffs, John Ericksons, and Andrei Psaryovs in the Church. The commie atheists (as opposed to commie believers (not oxymoronic, by the way)) were God’s instrument to purge the Church of the filth brought into it by crank clergy, pompous professors, and self-serving apparatchiki. If we don’t watch out… we’ll get the same. Remember what God said of the Laodiceans:
