Murmansk, the northernmost large city of Russia is at 68 degrees North… Barentsburg, the northernmost Russian town (the whole political story of Spitsbergen is convoluted and beyond our scope) is at 78 degrees North. Primarily, it’s a company town for Artikugol (Arctic Coal), as there’s a mine in the area. It’s seen a decline since Soviet days, but as the rest of the country recovers from the American-inspired Neoliberal excesses of the Nasty 90s, so shall this little town, God willing.
