A powerful snowstorm left nearly two million people on the East coast of the United States without electricity. On Saturday, 29 October, an unusually early and strong snowstorm caused long flight delays at international airports in Philadelphia and New York, power blackouts in outlying suburbs and rural areas, road accidents, and other irksome headaches.

About half a million people were without power in New Jersey, which declared a state of emergency. The same situation obtains in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, including the city of Philadelphia.

Electrical blackouts were also reported in the New York State and elsewhere.

About a thousand flights were cancelled due to the bad weather; many airports are closed for an indefinite period until the weather clears.

The added weight of the snow toppled many trees, as they haven’t lost their leaves, creating difficult conditions for traffic on roads and railroads.

In New York alone, by Saturday evening, some 600 trees were damaged. Municipal repair crews worked overtime to remove fallen branches from roads and roofs immediately.

Despite the fact that the snow lasted only a few hours, it set a record for the month of October, for the largest amount of snowfall in New York in the last 150 years.

Here in Albany NY, we lucked out (again). We only got a dusting of snow on the ground, and there was no interruption in the power. The Berkshires to our east got socked, PA got clobbered, let’s not talk about Jersey, the City got a snoot-full, but Albany’s still green with white patches (there’s more snow out in the outlying hill towns… that was true on Wednesday, too, as there was an earlier slight snowstorm up here that didn’t hit the news).

One wonders… will this storm affect people from the east going to the Sobor? If some cancel, that’ll favour the konvertsy brats, who tend to come from the South and West. Well, God DOES dispose, and we’ll have to see…
