On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia’s under no obligation to provide an explanation for a recent alleged delivery of arms to Syria. Lavrov told reporters at a news conference, “We don’t consider it necessary to explain or justify ourselves, as we’re not violating any international agreements or any [UN] Security Council resolutions. We’re only dealing with Syria in those items not outlawed under international law”. Lavrov’s comments followed the arrival last week of a Russian-operated ship in Syria. An official in Cyprus, where the vessel briefly stopped, said the ship was carrying ammunition.
Later, the USA said it raised the issue of the ship’s cargo with Moscow. On Tuesday, US envoy to the United Nations Susan Rice said that Washington had “very grave concerns about arms flows into Syria from any source”. In October, Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to impose an arms embargo on Syria. The UN says some 5,000 people have died since an uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began in March. However, Moscow insisted that the violence in Syria comes from both government forces and rebels, and, on Wednesday, Lavrov repeated calls for the two sides to lay down their arms, saying, “Weapons are being supplied to fighters and extremists in Syria who are trying to exploit the protest movement to seize power… this is unacceptable and non-productive. We consider necessary a halt to any form of violence in Syria, wherever it might originate, and the start of an all-inclusive national dialogue”. Lavrov also slammed unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and Europe against Syria by saying, “Unilateral sanctions are always an undermining of collective efforts, be they against Iran, Syria, or any other country”.

The USA’s irresponsibly playing with brinkmanship here. It’s interesting to see how Interventionist Democrats, Neocon Republicans, and Radical Progressives (Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney, and Katrina vanden Heuvel being good examples of each… yet, all three are from the affluent proprietor class, with identical class interests) are pushing this “bipartisan” tomfoolery with equal vigour. I’ll simply observe that the US hysteria over Syria will lead to nothing… Russia and China will definitely veto American aggression in the UN Security Council, and Brazil, South Africa, and India will be in their Amen Corner. The USA’s nothing but a spoilt and vicious tantrum-throwing child… it’ll be checkmated by more responsible adult and grounded countries. The Old Master (Lavrov) will meet Chilly Hilly (Clinton) in the squared circle, and he’ll win handily, two out of three falls without even breaking a sweat (he hasn’t been around since Adam for nought). There’s nothing like truth and justice, after all (it doesn’t exist inside the Beltway… don’t forget the Easter bombing of Belgrade… they actually argue for “humanitarian bombing”)…
