On Friday and Saturday, a 48-hour general strike will take place in Greece. Leading trades unions and private and public sector organisations will protest against the impending agreement with the “troika” of international creditors, the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, which will provide funding for the country in exchange for new spending cuts and long-term austerity measures of fiscal discipline. The strike, the second in a week, aims to paralyse government agencies, schools, and universities, as well as banks and hospitals. In Athens, public transport won’t operate for the two days, except for light-rail lines, which will run for seven hours. For two days, trains and ferries across the country would also stop operations. The unions are also planning three massive rallies in front of Parliament, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening.
