On 5 July 1946, French auto engineer and fashion designer Louis Réard introduced the world’s first mini-swimsuit, which he called a bikini. The designer gave his invention the name of Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, where the USA conducted an A-bomb test on 1 July 1946. Réard gave his innovation that name to emphasise the “explosive” effect of his trendy new fashion item.
