On Sunday, a police source said that a caged bear mauled a teenage girl at a recreation facility north of Moscow, saying, “The bear attacked a 14-year-old girl when she tried to feed the animal”. He said that the girl’s condition is yet unknown. This was the second bear attack in a private zoo in Russia this month. On 10 August, a 12-year-old girl was mauled by a bear at a private zoo in Amur Oblast in the Far Eastern Federal District when she tried to give the animal a drink from a bottle.

Editor’s Note:
I fear that these girls ran afoul of something that’s well-known to woodsy people in the know (I’m not such, but I do talk with them). Bears are attracted to, and attack, people who are having their periods. I’m told it’s the scent of the menstrual blood that sets off the animal. So, if it’s “that time”, do take a care if you’re in the woods.
