On Saturday, Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias arrived in Novokuznetsk, telling reporters at the airport, “The Kuzbass has a special place in the life of Russia. This region is a land of hard workers, a land of sobriety”. His Holiness visited the capital of the Kuzbass for Miners’ Day, meeting Kemerovo Oblast Governor Aman Tuleyev, thanking him for his support of the miners. Upon arrival in Novokuznetsk, Patriarch Kirill visited the Berezovsky coal mine where he consecrated a chapel in honour of St Barbara, the patron saint of miners. His Holiness met some 2,500 workers and their families, telling them, “The work of a miner is a podvig that underpins modern civilisation, for energy is the lifeblood of our civilisation. Society needs human ‘icebreakers’ to pave the way for others”. The Patriarch recognised miners’ labour, saying, “I know that your work, your sweat, and your blood are part of every kilowatt-hour of electricity and of every degree of heat. Our entire nation (народ) should be aware of this, and give great respect to miners’ labour”. Vladyki Kirill believes that the authorities must do everything to ensure that miners’ work is well-paid and that they have proper living and working conditions.

You can stand with HH, who stands for the working people… or, you can stand with Potapov and Paffhausen and support the plutocrats. It’s your choice. Remember, the love of money is the root of all evil… and remember who tried to ally the Church with such questionable groups as the American Enterprise Institute (who favour profits over workers, dontcha know). Somehow, I don’t think that “Greed is good” and “The race goes to the swiftest” are compatible with Christianity. I believe that I’m NOT alone in thinking such…
