On Saturday, in the latest in a series of similar incidents, unknown people daubed two prominent Ukrainian pro-EU oppositionist politicians… former Minister of Internal Affairs Yuri Lutsenko and his wife Irina, a lawmaker and member of the opposition all-Ukrainian Fatherland Bloc… with green dye in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov. The daubers used a dilute alcoholic solution of “brilliant green” dye, a cheap and popular topical antiseptic that one can find in every drugstore in Russia and other ex-Soviet states. Although it’s harmless, the substance is very difficult to wash out. UNIAN news agency reported that an unidentified woman splashed the liquid onto Lutsenko and his wife. Several minutes later, a man tried to do the same thing, but failed. Police arrested both of them. The couple was on its way to a continuing pro-European demonstration, going on since late November. The list of other people daubed with green dye in past months includes Inna Bogoslovskaya, a lawmaker who recently quit the ruling Party of Regions, and Sergei Vlasenko, a lawyer for imprisoned ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Timoshenko.

Hmm… the pro-EU sorts are vain… that’s why ordinary decent Ukrainians hate them. The only thing that they can do about it is “monkey warfare” of this sort. However, it does achieve its effect… for the pro-Westerners get overly-upset at the marring of their all-important appearance. Poor babies…
