Prominent Church spokesman Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin sharply criticised abortions, comparing them to the Holocaust, and said that he hopes Russians will consider them unacceptable, saying, “Abortions are the most terrible Holocaust in humanity’s life”, as he led a rally and a prayer against abortions and homosexual propaganda in downtown Moscow’s Gogolevsky Boulevard on Sunday. He went on to say, “Abortions have killed more people than all world wars. So, I hope they’ll be morally unacceptable in Russia”. Demonstrators held placards that read, “Stop killing children”, and “Moscow isn’t Sodom”. They called for nationwide laws to ban abortions and propaganda of homosexual relations amongst minors. A few Russian regions have already adopted laws prohibiting such propaganda. A similar rally took place in the city of Kazan, the capital of the Volga Republic of Tatarstan.

This does NOT mean that Fr Vsevolod endorses JP’s antics or his “Pro-Life Movement” follies. There’s a vast difference between Fr Vsevolod’s position and that of unhinged rightwing Orthodox konvertsy in the USA. Note well that Fr Vsevolod didn’t call for the illegalisation of abortion, members of the crowd did. The Church does NOT wish to illegalise abortion… it wishes to make it morally unacceptable and to place limits upon it. The Church also calls for broad and generous state social welfare provisions so that pregnant women don’t feel pressured to have abortions, again, unlike the childish loud Anglo-Saxon converts here in the USA.
In this alone, the real Church differs from loudmouthed convert rightwingers here in the USA, who are virtually all troglodyte rightwingers of the worst possible sort. JP spoke at the godless libertarian American Enterprise Institute and hobnobs with Hard Right trash like Darrell Issa (the saga about Issa’s military record and the car is quite interesting!)… Fr Vsevolod doesn’t do looney tunes stuff like that. The Church teaches that the state has a vital role to play in preventing abortion… by providing family benefits of the most generous sort. Ergo, if you hear loudmouthed konvertsy claiming that the greedster Republican platform is the teaching of the Church, they’re chock fulla shit… they’re so full of it that it’s pouring out of their ears at high velocity. HH believes that the current capitalist world economy is a fraud, and has said so in so many words.
By the way, the Church isn’t attacking homosexuals, as HH said, “We respect all human choices, including those of sexual orientation”. They’re focusing on the promotion of homosexuality amongst minors, which is saying that it’s against paedophilia and the presentation of laudatory school courses on the topic. That is, toleration of adult homosexuals is one thing, teaching it in the schools or tolerating paedophiles (a decided minority amongst homosexuals, by the way) is another, and they’re not related. My view is similar to HH’s… we should leave homosexuals alone and put no civil or criminal penalties on them. On the other hand, we shouldn’t teach in school that it’s “just another choice” or that NAMBLA’s just another organisation. Homosexuals are what they are… and we should leave them alone in peace if they’re law-abiding sorts. If you want to find out where the hypocrites and phonies are, look for the loud anti-gays… that’s where they are! The Real Church has dealt with the homosexuals in its midst compassionately for two millennia (as in the case of Bishop Nikon Mironov)… and it’ll continue to do so after the konvertsy leave us.
