Patriarch Neofit: Our Kids Need to Know the ABCs of Orthodoxy

00 Patriarch Neofit of Bulgaria. 19.05.13

______________________________

Patriarch Neofit Dimitrov stated that Bulgarian kids should have the opportunity to learn about their Orthodox Christian heritage. On Sunday, Neofit addressed clergy and believers on the 60th anniversary of the restoration of the Bulgarian Patriarchate. The message, read out by Bishop Naum Dimitrov of Stob, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod, made a strong case for the introduction of religion as a subject in school, with a special emphasis on Orthodox Christianity. It also reflected on the last 60 years of history for Orthodoxy in Bulgaria. Neofit wrote, “The past decades weren’t easy, but with God’s help, immutably led by the spirit of truth, all of us, according to the measure of our powers, bore witness to the resurrection of Christ. Today, we call for, and will continue to call for, more mission and witness to eternal salvation in our dear homeland and beyond her confines. What’s been accomplished isn’t little, but it isn’t enough either”. Patriarch Neofit also reflected on the “spiritual crisis” that Bulgarian society is going through, which is deeper than any financial and political troubles, saying, “There is a crisis of values, a crisis in thinking through the eternal truths about God, the world, and humanity”.

7 May 2013. The Pot Boils in the Midwest… Is Mollard Going to Russia Any Time Soon?

01 pot calls kettle black

Some call me a “yellow journalist”… I wonder why? Bear in mind, “Pay, pray, and obey” ain’t Orthodox

______________________________

In the Midwest, the deaneries held elections for their deans. In 2011, Moriak appointed one of the deans. Does it surprise you that this dean was the only one supported Moriak’s reinstatement? Did Moriak force the old dean out? You pays your money and you takes your choice. Recently, when the priests met to elect a new dean, they promptly chose the previous dean, not the one appointed by Moriak. That says something about Moriak’s general popularity, doesn’t it? In other words, only the drooling konvertsy toddlers supported Moriak and his culture war ravings… everyone else wanted the nutty-squirrel nightmare over, and as soon as possible.

Rumours are swirling that a parish invited Mollard to preside at a special event, but has since taken back the invitation. Huh? Who the hell invites the Metropolitan for a special event… then, disinvites him? I’ve never heard of such a thing! No one knows why Mollard got the disinvite… this is one of those things blandly denied by Syosset. They call people like me “yellow journalists”… I know what the First Families say… my contacts tell me. Some of the First Family worthies would be SURPRISED to know some of my contacts. I frankly label some things “buzz”, “rumours”, or “it’s what’s out there”… you have a right to know what’s what, even if some arrogant clergyman too big for his britches thinks otherwise. Remember, the clergy are just as bound by morality as we are… they get a “Get Out of Jail Free” card for NOTHING.

The OCA is moaning that it can do nothing about Ray Velencia. They claim that they have no control over him, “we suspended him, we notified the Greeks”… yadda, yadda, yadda. That’s bullshit. The OCA Holy Synod can DEFROCK Ray Velencia for daring to sue a priest in good standing whilst under suspension. The OCA HS can DEFROCK Ray Velencia for representing himself as a priest in good standing whilst under suspension. The OCA HS can DEFROCK Ray Velencia for going to a parish of another Orthodox Archdiocese and pretending to be a clergyman in good standing whilst there. The OCA HS can send a public and sharp protest to the GOAA for having allowed one of its parishes to “enable” Sir Ray’s shenanigans. In short, it’s not that the OCA HS can do nothing… they refuse to do anything about it, which is something else altogether. One of my contacts told me that Bishop Mel (he has an article in the Russian Wikipedia, but not in the English one… my, my, my) was down in the dumps over some of the HS bullshit… I couldn’t blame him… you see, if the OCA HS refuses to discipline Ray, it loses all moral cred. It’s become a case of “all the king’s horses and the king’s men”… one can see why Bishop Mel wouldn’t care for that.

One of the things out there is that stories circulate that Mollard’s going to Russia. Is he or isn’t he? I haven’t the foggiest. The only thing that people seem to know is that Tosi (the clueless commissar of the Syosset Mafia) might accompany him. So far, there’s no buzz about Lyonyo or Jillions. I’ve no doubt that HH wants to have a sit-down with Mollard personally. There’s also word that Mollard’s trying to get some ethnic clergy to accompany him, to make it look legit for HH. The whispers on that are that Mollard doesn’t have the gelt to pay for anyone’s fare, so, it’s clear that HH isn’t footing the bill, save for Mollard himself, a cell-attendant, and Tosi. We’ll have to see on this one. It makes sense… HH is the Godfather and Mollard’s the latest button man in America… Mr Big wants to meet the latest cop on the beat. As I say, we’ll have to see on this one.

Bear in mind that no edifice collapses overnight. The OCA could stumble on for years in its present disarray… unless an event precipitates a fall. Mollard’s placid bovine incompetency does increase the chance of that… but that’s nothing that I (or anyone else) can predict. Stay tuned…

Czech Orthodox Church Head Resigns over Accusations of Philandering

01 JP and Krystof

Two shitbirds of a feather… JP and Krystof…  they’re both gone, now… good riddance to bad rubbish

______________________________

On Friday, a church official announced that Metropolitan Kryštof Pulec, the First Hierarch of the Orthodox Church of all Czechia and Slovakia since 2006, stepped down amidst allegations from critics stating that he’d breached his oath as a monk by having sex with women, adding that Kryštof resigned on his own free will for the sake of church unity. Previously, Kryštof, 59, dismissed the accusations and said he’d take legal steps to clear his name. Last week, TV Nova reported that Kryštof had several girlfriends with whom he’s fathered children. It said the Holy Synod urged Kryštof to refute the accusations by mid-May. According to Nova, the Church accused Kryštof of having sex with a priest’s wife for seven years. In addition, she isn’t the only woman with whom Kryštof committed a sin. He fathered children with others, maybe up to ten of them, the synod said, cited by Nova. Kryštof said that he has two daughters, both born before he took an oath as a monk.

After Kryštof’s resignation, 87-year-old Bishop Simeon Jakovljević of Brno-Olomouc in Morava will be locum tenens for about 40 days until the Church chooses a new First Hierarch. On Friday, Simeon told journalists, “The metropolitan [Kryštof] registered certain rising tensions that got unnecessarily dramatised. He decided it would be prudent to step down to secure peace”. Simeon went on to state that, in the recent past, Kryštof had, perhaps, overworked; now, he can devote himself to academic study and prayer. He said that he took over Kryštof’s duties, and that he’ll supervise the preparations of the celebration of the 1,150th anniversary of the arrival of Christian missionaries Ss Cyril and Methodius to medieval Moravia. Simeon pointed up that Orthodox dignitaries from all over the world would arrive in Czechia in late May to attend the celebration.

Kryštof said that the accusation might have links to an in-process property settlement between the Czech state and churches, of which 1.14 billion Koruna  (1.82 billion Roubles. 57 million USD. 44 million Euros. 37 million UK Pounds) is to go to the Orthodox Church. On Thursday, Kryštof told TV Nova, “Some would like the money to be spent exclusively on humanitarian projects for seniors, ill people, and children. Others, however, say that the money should be deposited in funds to draw more money for priests’ [pay]“. There are about 100,000 Orthodox believers amongst 10.5-million Czechs. The number has risen, mainly due to the arrival of immigrants from the Ukraine and other countries with an Orthodox majority.

Kryštof, whose secular name is Radim Pulec, was born in Prague (Praha) on 29 June 1953. He studied at the Hussite Theological Faculty of the Charles University in Prague, graduated from the Orthodox Theological Faculty in Prešov, eastern Slovakia, and pursued distance studies at the Moscow Theological Academy. He earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1987. In 1974, he was ordained to the diaconate and as a priest. In 1985, he was tonsured, becoming a monk, taking the name Kryštof. He served at Prague’s Cathedral of SS Cyril and Methodius. In 1988, he was elected bishop of Olomouc and Brno. After the death of then-First Hierarch of Czechia and Slovakia Dorotej Filip in 2000, Kryštof became Archbishop of Prague and all Czechia. After the death of Slovak First Hierarch Nikolai Kocvár in May 2006, Kryštof became the Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church in Czechia and Slovakia.

15 April 2013. One of the Cabinet Weighs In on the Midwest Situation

signing-on-the-dotted-line

______________________________

One of the Cabinet (a priest) wrote me:

The OCA Diocese of the Midwest needs healing, as soon as possible. We don’t have the luxury of time for weighing the pros and cons. The flock needs a pastor. Your friend who wrote in regarding Alexander Golitizin was completely in the right. Yes… he’s somewhat soft in theology and he was too close to Kallistos Ware, but he has no public moral turpitude on his plate and he knows many of the local clergy personally… that’s no small beer. The flock needs to heal after having a radical firebreather at its head. At least, Alexander won’t start pointless wrangles over piffles. He isn’t perfect, but he’s good enough… and that’s what we need. I hope that the diocese makes up its mind quickly… it can’t afford a long interregnum. In any case, who’s the alternative? There isn’t anyone else…

I think that my interlocutor is correct. The Diocese of the Midwest needs a pastor, and the locum is the best man available at the time in the location… there are times when “oft we mar what’s good enough by aiming for perfection”… I think that this time is one of those. God willing, let’s NOT have another long “search”… we can’t afford such.
