16 June 2013. Some of My Favourite Things… “Bring ‘Em Home!”

00 US Soldier in Afghanistan. 4 April 2012

THIS is what the Republican anti-life programme stands for… any questions? Bring ‘em home! There’s something that you can bank on… the Republican oligarchs’ kids aren’t bleeding for their profits. It’s evil… and all their mewling about “Pro-Life” can’t change it…

Sadly, this is still relevant. Like Pete, I’m no pacifist. If some oppressor, either foreign or domestic, were to come, I’d be one of the fighters, you bet! My Zaporozhian dander would be up, and I wouldn’t be alone! I’d do what I could, you could count on that. Bring our boys home… let no more of our lovely working-class kids die for the grasping McMansion pukes and their profits. If we ended the wars and returned taxation on the rich to Pre-Bush levels, we’d have the debt spent down WITHOUT cutting the social safety net. That’s why I stand proud as a Democratic Socialist.

You can have the oligarchs’ wars or you can have prosperity for all. It’s our choice…

Pope Francisco Blessed Hundreds of “Easy Riders” and Their Harleys

00 Pope Francisco. motorcycle. Rome. St Peter's Square. 16.06

_____________________________

On Sunday, Pope Francisco Bergoglio welcomed and blessed hundreds of Harley-Davidson bikers, in addition to tens of thousands of pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square for Angelus prayers. The manufacturer presented two of the iconic bikes to the pope this week. The head of the Catholic Church traditionally tours the square in an open-top Mercedes jeep. Cops allowed some 800 selected “Easy Riders” to take their bikes into the square, and more were on display on the road leading up to Vatican City. A four-day event in Rome marked the iconic American marque’s 110th birthday.

Editor’s Note:

From a Left perspective, Francisco Bergoglio has exceeded expectations. He’s come out swinging against crapitalism and the rightwing in general. That means that rightwing loudmouths like Hannes Jacobses, Rod Dreher, James Paffhausen, Victor Potapov, and Michael Dahulich have a dinner of Crow Supreme waiting for them! They’re gonna have to eat it all and LIKE IT. After all, they all claim that they LOVE the Catholic Church! Well, Pope Francisco is its leader, and he speaks for it, guys.

Pope Francisco is a REAL pro-lifer… he opposes abortion… and capital punishment, American warmongering, crapitalist greed, and American global hegemonism. He’s not a posturing phoney like Jacobses, who supports the godless rightwing Acton Institute (who oppose the social justice teaching of their pope). He’s not a paid Stepin Fetchit hireling of the American government like Potapov (he might be retired by now, but everyone knows his ties to Langley in the past). He’s not a mercurial idiot like Dreher, who changes his opinion more often than he changes his gotchies. He’s not a juvenile prevaricator like Paffhausen, who tells people with a straight face that he didn’t say what he did say. He’s not an ambitious twit like Dahulich, who trims his sails in accordance with expediency.

Pope Francisco is the REAL DEAL. He’s sorry for even the small part he played in Argentina’s period of fascism (his actions of the present show that in spades). On the one hand, politically, he’s stellar… on the other, in his support of Uniatism, he’s wrong. However, the Orthodox konvertsy (and their ethnic enablers) scream about how they LOVE the Catholic Church’s stance. OK, guys… get with the programme. Either apologise to the entire Church in public for your support of the anti-life Right or shut the fuck up. There’s no other choice on offer. Watch ‘em be hypocrites… they won’t apologise, and they won’t follow Pope Francisco’s lead. That tells you their worth, doesn’t it? It’s not overly high, is it?

Ease on down the road, Francisco… we’re not on the same road, but we’re going to the same destination. Keep it straight…

Russia’s Birth Rate Up 5.6% in 2012

00 GOP Prolifers. 21.01.13

______________________________

On Friday, Health Minister (Minzdrav) Veronika Skvortsova said that the birth rate in Russia grew by 5.6 percent year-on-year in 2012, stating, “In 2012, the birth rate increased by 5.6 percent… from 12.6 to 13.3 [births] per 1,000 people”. She added that the number of abortions fell by 5.5 percent, or by 53,900, due to state measures to support pregnant women living in difficult circumstances. She also noted that about 3,000 babies were born with the aid of advanced assisted reproductive technologies.

Editor’s Note:

Here’s where the rubber hits the tarmac:

The number of abortions fell by 5.5 percent, or by 53,900, due to state measures to support pregnant women living in difficult circumstances.

That is, if you march in a so-called “Pro-Life” march or support the so-called “Pro-Life” movement, you attack poor pregnant women and provide backhand support to abortion. The “Pro-Life” movement is nothing but a stalking horse for the worst portion of the rightwing… people who wish to turn the clock back by cutting away all government social spending. Vote LEFT… that’s how you support social justice in all its forms… a fair taxation system that makes the rich pay their fair share… an economy that protects social equity, not greedy “investors”… protections for ALL workers from arbitrary management action… no more aggressive warfare in foreign parts… and the dismantlement of the Bush police state.

The state isn’t an ogre… the Church teaches that it’s better than anarchy is… and do reflect that Paffhausen, Potapov, Dreher, et al are on the side of godless anarchy (libertarian license), not on the side of godly order (legitimate state authority). Many things are NOT what they appear at first glance… take a care…

Will Georgia Ban Abortions?

Barbara-Marie Drezhlo. Respect for Life from Beginning to End. 2012

______________________________

The Georgian state has begun thinking of banning abortions after influential Georgian Orthodox Patriarch Ilia Ghudushauri-Shiolashvili pitched the idea in his Easter sermon on 5 May. Many churches may be pro-life, but in this devout Christian country, which cherishes the Church leader above any other public figure, words from the patriarch can carry as much power as papal bulls once did in Europe. During his sermon, the patriarch called on the government to stop the “terrible sin” of abortion and “filicide”, aside from a few circumstantial exceptions. He blamed both Bolshevikatheists” from the past and modern liberal philosophy for the prevalence of abortions. Georgia tops the South Caucasus for abortions, with 408 performed per 1,000 live births, according to a study by the WHOthe Caucasus Research Resource Centres reported (By comparison, the EU rate is 222 per 1,000 live births).

Georgian government officials, who can’t hold a candle to the patriarch in terms of public support, quickly gave the nod to the Church on considering an abortion ban. Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili responded by saying that baby-boosting legislation is in order. However, he sensibly suggested that if one wanted to improve the country’s bleak demographic situation, the focus should be on economic incentives rather than abortions. Amongst top Georgian officials, only female Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani ventured to express outright scepticism, saying that the ban could make abortion an underground business. She said that prohibiting informing parents about the sex of a future child is as far as she is personally willing to go as a way to prevent selective abortions, which favour boys.

With one eye on the country’s modest population of 4.48 million, the patriarch has long pushed Georgians to have more babies. After he offered to baptise every third child as an incentive, the Church held mass baptism ceremonies several times a year. Now, he’s proposed to cash-strapped parents that, rather than aborting any additional children, they hand them over to the Church’s care. However, gender researcher Nargiza Arjevanidze cautioned that Georgia’s Soviet experience actually illustrates the dangers of an abortion ban. She said in comments to EurasiaNet that a ban during the Stalin era “led to the rise of back-room abortions that often ended in health complications and even death. Another ban could result in similar problems. Those who can afford it would travel to neighbouring countries; others would resort to illegal procedures”. She believes than an anti-abortion law would do little to reduce Georgia’s high abortion rate. Rather, Arjevanidze thinks that promotion of contraception and family planning is the real need.

Editor’s Note:

There are those who believe that we can solve the problems associated with abortion by simply outlawing it, and making those who provide it criminals. That’s simply hogwash of the worst possible sort. Before Roe, abortion was readily available to women who had the money to pay for it. Those who didn’t have the money to access proper medical intervention turned to quacks or “homebrew solutions”. In short, there was plenty of abortion going on despite the formal ban on the procedure.

In any case, the Church doesn’t bless political action to solve moral problems. That’s a Catholic solution (said with no rancour towards individual Catholics). It’s not Christ’s solution… it’s the solution of Dostoyevsky’s Grand Inquisitor. That is, when we try to address moral problems with the police power of the state rather than with the moral authority of Our Lord Christ, not only does the effort usually fail, it ends in exacerbating the problem. Thus, to march in “Pro-life” rallies and to support rightwing politicians because they’re anti-abortion is clearly anti-Christian (it certainly ain’t Orthodox).

St Serafim Vyritsky didn’t carry on a political protest… he prayed for the Soviet state and for its conversion. He prayed for the victory of the Red Army in the VOV, as that was preferable to a Fascist victory. He was typical of many in the Church. We didn’t carry signs… we didn’t sign petitions… we prayed. That’s right… we prayed. It worked. By the 1980s, the KPSS abandoned the anti-religious struggle… the rebirth of the Church began, not in 1991, but in 1985. If all things are equal, then, Christ calls on us to pray. He calls on us to aid unwed mothers anonymously. He calls on us to show civility to Pro-Choice people. I’ll tell you a “secret”… virtually all Pro-Choice people view abortion as a nasty alternative, one that they’d like to see minimised. They’re not pro-abortion ogres. We should have nothing to do with Randall Terry and all those even remotely of his ilk.

To take the current Pro-Life narrative as a given is to reduce a full-blown moral dilemma (for there’s no “clean” moral solution to the abortion mess) to a cartoonish, juvenile, and fundamentally-untrue fairy tale. It’s not simply “good anti-abortionists” against “evil pro-abortionists”. It’s a case where all people who favour life over death (and most Pro-Choice people DO fall in that category) have to face stern reality and unyielding facts. We can have our own opinions, but we can’t have “our own facts”.

Are we Christians? Are we Orthodox Christians? Then, we face the dilemma that Dostoyevsky posed using the figure of the Grand Inquisitor. Think hard on that one… remember, “simple” doesn’t mean “easy”, it doesn’t mean “obvious”. Do bear in mind St Serafim praying for four years for the victory of the Red Army… it led to setting up a situation that led eventually to the relaxation of the ‘80s that led to the Church’s liberation. In like manner, we may have to keep abortion legal in order to reduce it.

I fear that many will call me pro-abortion for what I’ve written. One takes that risk. I’m not such, but you have no control over what others think of what one says or does. However, I’ll say this much… I’ve got the guts and grit to speak my mind, and that’s being “honest to God”. I don’t think that displeases the Almighty… and I’m not alone in thinking that way…

6 March 2013. You Can’t Make Up Shit Like This… THIS is What the Rightwing Crazies Believe In… Mark It and Oppose Them

00 Obama. hate poster. 06.03.13

______________________________

Look at the above image. I found it whilst I was searching for images today. It’s disgusting and untruthful, isn’t it? However, not only do the rightwing kooks in general eat this shit up, but the Orthodox konvertsy are even worse… they’re some of the most unhinged righties that I’ve ever met, bar none. Many of them are on the Monomakhos site… others came out of the looney-tunes “Continuing Anglican” movement (as typified by a reactionary site called Stand Firm in the Faith)… they believe that Coolidge‘s nutty squirrel laissez-faire economic policies (which led directly to the Great Depression) are the ne plus ultra of economics and that they’re a beleaguered minority beset by a voracious “socialist” government (actually, the government doesn’t give a rat’s ass about them, but that’s attending to reality, and these sorts would NEVER do that).

Take a good look at the above… that’s the sort of shit that’s peddled by the likes of Potapov, Paffhausen, and Whiteford (the last-named is the least-culpable, as he’s the most ignorant). It’s nasty, isn’t it? However… if you march in a March for Life, that’s what you march for. Not quite what you thought, was it? I’d say, “Don’t march in a ‘March for Life’ until it disassociates itself explicitly and completely from Hard Righties such as Rick Perry, Darrell Issa, and Franklin Graham“. If it doesn’t, you’re responsible for their evil agenda. Sad to say, but there’s no “clean” option here. You can stand for social justice, but if you do, you have to stand with those who believe in legal abortion (that’s the way of it in the real world… you can’t choose your family and you can’t choose who stands for what).

If you stand for “Pro-Life“, you also stand for the promiscuous use of the death penalty, unending warmongering in foreign parts, the gutting of the American economy, generous tax cuts to the rich (and Scroogish cuts to social services), and the continuing rape of the working-class to enrich the corporate oligarchs (that’s the agenda of “Pro-Life” politicians such as Chris Smith and Willard Romney). Weigh both in the scales… neither are “clean”; both are “grey”… I have. I stand for social justice… the Left may stand for legal abortion, but it also stands against the Anti-Life agenda of the Hard Right. It’s NOT an easy or simple decision (unlike the cartoonish and mawkish arguments brought forward by the “Pro-Lifers”), but one HAS to go where the least evil’s being wrought. An anti-abortion plank doesn’t mean that an agenda is Pro-Life… NEVER forget that. It may be just the exact opposite… Satan laughs…

25 January 2013. There’s Good Shit Out There… A Link to Consistent Life: Voices for Peace and Life

Barbara-Marie Drezhlo. Respect for Life from Beginning to End. 2012

______________________________

One of the Cabinet made me hip to a website called Consistent Life… click here to go there. These people aren’t rightwing anti-abortionists, they’re real deal prolifers. They don’t cheerlead for foreign wars, the DHS Gestapo, or the Affluent Effluent… they stand up against the Rightwing Culture of Death wherever they find it. That includes so many in the so-called “Pro-Life” movement… if you want to be Pro-Life, you have to stop shilling for the extremist agenda of the Republican Party, full stop. Oddly enough, it’s the rightwing “social conservatives” who’re the greatest enemies of real Pro-Life through their support of greedy pols who want to dismantle the social safety net… they scream about the “Culture of Death”, yet, they’re its greatest enablers through their votes for rightwing politicians. Interesting paradox, isn’t it?

If you want to call me a “socialist“… go ahead! I’m a Leftist, and proud of it. Interesting… for many years I was schizo… I was a union member (and walked the picket line) and, yet, remained a Republican. The meltdown of ’07 opened my eyes. I saw the objective evil in the anti-life and anti-people ethos of the Republican Party… it IS a Culture of Death (when sick people are refused healthcare if they have the “wrong” insurance, that’s evil, yet the Republicans smile at it all). I saw how my Nicky was treated shabbily by his employers… and it was “legal”.

There’s Pro-Life and there’s Anti-Abortion. They’re NOT the same thing. Think on that, if you will…
