RF Gosduma Ratifies Child Abuse Convention

00 Putin with child. 07.10.12

______________________________

On Friday, The RF Gosduma approved Russia’s accession to the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse. The convention opened for signing in 2007, and it came into force on 1 July 2010. Russia signed the convention in 2012. To date, 46 states have signed and 26 states have ratified the convention, which sets out international standards for protecting children against sexual exploitation and abuse. The Gosduma also ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution, and Child Pornography. The UN General Assembly adopted the protocol on 25 May 2000. Russia signed the protocol in 2012. According to the protocol, the signatory countries must stipulate criminal, civil, or administrative penalties for selling children for sexual exploitation, organ transfers for profit, or forced labour, as well as for improperly inducing consent, as an intermediary, to a child’s adoption in violation of the applicable international legal instruments on adoption. These offenses include offering, obtaining, procuring, or providing a child for child prostitution and producing, distributing, disseminating, importing, exporting, offering, selling, or possessing child pornography.

Editor’s Note:

The USA added the following caveat to the Protocol upon its ratification of the instrument in 2002:

(1) NO ASSUMPTION OF OBLIGATIONS UNDER THE CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD. The United States understands that the United States assumes no obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child by becoming a party to the Protocol.

That is, the Bush Administration and the Republican Party stated baldly that the ratification of the Protocol added NO additional protection for American children. Sexual predators have “rights”, dontcha know! That’s what “freedom” means for the GOP… along with predatory buccaneer crapitalism, toothless labour laws, mind-boggling greed, and the lightest of tax burdens upon the rich. If you vote for such, that’s what you vote for, full stop. It puts a new face on the posturing moralisers (especially, the smarmy self-righteous Evangelicals), doesn’t it? None dare call it evil… especially, not the well-paid and bovine American news media

At UN Hearing, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić Sez Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal Guilty of Flagrant Violations of Human Rights

00 Serbian folk wisdom. 23.09.12

______________________________

On Tuesday, the President of the UN General Assembly, former Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremić, accused his critics of trying to intimidate and pressure him into cancelling a special meeting on international criminal justice boycotted by the USA and some of its allies. Jeremić set up the meeting last week, whilst serving as President of the Assembly, a largely-ceremonial, but high-profile, post. Critics of the event said Jeremić that organised it as an excuse to attack the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)… an allegation Jeremić rejected. A spokesman for the American mission to the UN explained its decision to boycott the event by saying, “It’s an unbalanced, inflammatory, thematic debate … on the role of international criminal justice in reconciliation”.

Jordan and Canada also boycotted the event, whilst EU countries sent junior diplomats. A number of key officials from international organisations and tribunals, including the ICTY, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and the International Criminal Court (ICC), chose not to attend. Without accusing any individual countries, Jeremić suggested that the 11 officials from the international organisations and tribunals didn’t attend due to outside pressure, adding that he, too, was under pressure to cancel the debate entirely, saying, “Unfortunately, these ladies and gentlemen refused to come to this debate. So, we worked with those who accepted, given that I wouldn’t balk under pressure to cancel what I believe is a debate on a critically-important topic. Somebody obviously thought that I could be embarrassed and intimidated into giving it (the debate) up”.

Jeremić said that the fact that the tone of the debate was more critical than supportive of the ICC, ICTY, ICTR, and other war crimes tribunals was because those who would’ve supported those courts chose not to attend the UN session. Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić was amongst those who spoke. He hammered away at the ICTY in a 45-minute speech to the assembly, telling participants, “The prosecution was favoured over the defence” and that the court was guilty of the “most flagrant violation of human rights”. Serbia and its ally Russia sharply criticised the tribunal over recent decisions to free two Croatian generals and a former Kosovo Albanian guerrilla commander.

Jeremić said that amongst those who avoided last week’s debate were the presidents of the ICC, ICTY, and ICTR, head of the UN Office of Legal Affairs Patricia O’Brien, head of Human Rights Watch Kenneth Roth, and former ICTY/ICTR chief prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. He said, “How did it come about that all of them at the end of the day couldn’t be with us, couldn’t be with the member states on 10 April? We’re talking about too big a number … just to put it down to chance, that they just couldn’t make it”.

Editor’s Note:

Let’s keep it simple. The USA chooses to cloak its warmongering under a façade of smarmy pseudo-legality. These courts deal in ex post factovictor’s justice”… they aren’t real courts at all. The USA invaded the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, and Libya… and it’s beating the war drums for an invasion of Syria and Iran. I know who belongs in the prisoner’s dock… it’s not Serb patriots whose only crime was opposing the American-fomented and –financed breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (don’t forget, the present Croatian leadership is the direct descendant of the murderous Ustaše of World War II… the USA turned a blind eye to butchers of Orthodox Serbs and Croatian Jews escaping to South America and the USA). The USA refused to participate because its amoral and noxious foreign policy was under scrutiny… and they hate it when the truth is told about their unprincipled, unscrupulous, and brutal warmongering. God bless Vuk Jeremić… he told the truth.

Orthodox people have an obligation to support their Serb co-religionists in this. We shouldn’t follow disreputable quislings like Victor Potapov and James Paffhausen, who’ve sold out to the American powers-that-be (making them two of the worst “Sergianists” who ever existed… ironically, Potapov screams loudly about “Sergianism” in Russia whilst being more guilty of it than his targets are… fancy that). That’s the way it is…

UN Upgrades Palestinian Status to Non-Member Observer State

______________________________

On Thursday, the UN General Assembly recognised the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a non-member observer state. 138 UN members approved the Palestinian bid, submitted by President Mahmoud Abbas, nine voted against it, and 41 abstained from voting. The move amounts to an implicit recognition of Palestinian statehood and increases the PA’s chances of joining other UN bodies. It also allows the Palestinian Authority to challenge the continuing construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land in the International Criminal Court. Before the historic vote, Abbas urged the General Assembly “to issue the birth certificate of Palestine”. He also reiterated that Palestinians would continue their efforts to achieve fully-recognised statehood.

Abbas submitted Palestine’s official application for recognition as an independent state in the UN in September 2011. An American veto in the Security Council blocked that bid. Thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip greeted the Thursday vote with great jubilation, as it formally gives them global recognition. Now, the PA, which earlier had “permanent observer” status at the UN, joins the Vatican as the only other entity with non-member observer state status.

Exactly 65 years ago, on 29 November 1947, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for Palestine to be partitioned between Arabs and Jews, allowing for the formation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948. The Palestinians rejected that partition plan, and decades of tension and violence followed. The Palestinians demand the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War, as a precondition for peace talks with Tel Aviv.

Editor’s Note:

This is a good step. The Church supports the Palestinians… not the violent Zionists and their American sugar-daddies. If it wasn’t for American support, Israel would be forced to have serious peace talks with the Palestinians. As more than one Arab has told me, “So-called ‘terrorism’ will end when the USA ends its support of Zionist terrorism“. Amen.

However, to be clear… I oppose Zionism and all its works… I also oppose anti-Semitism and all its works. That’s part and parcel of a unified world view… to be against anti-Semitism, but to support Zionism, is a logical impossibility. Zionism is racism… anti-Semitism is racism… both are evil and all decent people must fight both.

Russia Hopes that the USA may Eventually Lift Cuban Embargo

______________________________

According to Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin, Russia hopes that the Americans will follow their decision to ease their blockade of Cuba with other moves that’d fully lift the blockade. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution urging Washington to give up its trade embargo, which is now in its 51st year. Recently, the USA somewhat eased the blockade. Specifically, it’s removed the restrictions concerning visits by US citizens to their relatives in Cuba, as well as allowing cash remittances. Churkin feels that the unilateral US sanctions have proved incapable of affecting the Cuban people’s choice of the model of social development, but have only served to lower the island country’s living standards.

Once again, the UN General Assembly demanded that the USA “in the shortest possible time” lift its commercial and financial embargo against Cuba. The USA started the blockade 51 years ago, and it seriously undermined the island’s economy of the island. 186 UN member states supported the resolution; three countries voted against it (the USA, Israel, and Palau), and two abstained (Micronesia, Marshall Islands). The resolution calls on the international community to refrain in future from destructive actions such as those taken by Washington against Cuba. As the resolution emphasised, these actions are contrary to all countries’ obligations under the UN Charter, and under international law.

29 September 2012. RIA-Novosti Infographics. Sino-Japanese Dispute over the Senkaku Islands

______________________________

The territorial dispute between China and Japan escalated after Tokyo officially decided to buy three islands of the Senkaku archipelagoBeijing, which considers the islands an integral part of the People’s Republic of China, announced the deal illegal and invalid. On 26 September, speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Japanese Prime Minister Noda Yosihiko said that his country wouldn’t compromises in the dispute with China regarding the Senkaku Islands. In response, a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said, “Some countries, ignoring historical facts and international law, flagrantly violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries”, referring to the Japanese government.

The Senkaku Islands (Chinese: Diaoyu) are located in the East China Sea, about 170 kilometres (106 miles) northeast of Taiwan. According to a statement in Beijing, China first discovered the archipelago in 1371. In 1895, according to the Treaty of Shimonoseki, which ended the First Sino-Japanese War, China ceded the islands to Japan. After World War II, the USA took over the islands and it transferred them to Tokyo in 1972. Both Taiwan (Republic of China) and the PRC believe that Japan holds the island illegally. In turn, the Japanese government said that China and Taiwan began to claim the islands in the 1970′s, when it became clear that the area was rich in minerals.

USA Denies Iranian Officials Visas for UN General Assembly Meet

______________________________

The Iranian Fars news agency reported that the USA denied entry visas to Iranian officials, including two ministers, expected to attend next week’s United Nations General Assembly meeting. The US State Department refrained from issuing visas for 20 of the 160 people for whom the Iranian government had requested entry visas two months ago. Many Iranian officials are subject to travel bans under sanctions over Iran’s controversial nuclear programme. Fars did not name the two ministers denied visas to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, but it said that Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his chief of staff Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie would accompany Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad is expected to give his final speech at the UN General Assembly meeting on Wednesday. Since he took office, Ahmadinejad has attended all annual UN General Assembly meetings. Over 150 security officers will guarantee Ahmadinejad’s security during his stay in New York. Tehran is currently under several packages of Western-backed sanctions, including an EU-brokered oil embargo that came into effect on 1 July. The USA, Israel, and a number of Western European countries suspect Iran of running a nuclear weapons programme under the guise of a civil nuclear project. Iran denies this; it maintains that its nuclear ambitions are purely peaceful.

Editor’s Note:

Such petty shit is the only thing that the USA and Israel can do to Iran. Iran has guarantees from Russia and China, which means that the bellicose BS from Willy is absolute moonshine. Bibi the Bobo’s enmeshed in a coalition crisis at home and President Obama knows that he can’t attack Iran, since it has Russian and Chinese assurances. Therefore, NOTHING is going to happen, save for petty shit like this. Sad, ain’t it? Pass the jug, we all need a snort…
