The website of the Diocese of Korsun reported that a consecration ceremony was held for a Memorial Cross on the summit of the Cerro del Contadero in Spain in memory of White Guard Russian volunteers in Franco’s army, Orthodox soldiers who fought for the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. Archpriest Andrei Kordochkin, the rector of the Nativity of Christ parish in Madrid, led the service. After the consecration of the memorial cross, the priest served a Pannikhida for the Russian volunteers. Fr Andrei told the people gathered, “These ‘White’ Russian volunteers wrote a page of history, not only for Spain, but for the Russian Orthodox Church. Unlike the Soviet volunteers, all of them were Orthodox; three of them were priests, who served the Divine Liturgy. Today’s prayerful event is our obligation to the Russian warriors who lived and died in Spain as Orthodox Christians”. Jesús Mansilla Alba, the mayor of the village of Checa, which is near the mountain, erected the cross. Villagers and pilgrims from Madrid and València attended the event. A group of Russian volunteers served on this hill from 1 September 1938 to 16 January 1939. Archpriest Aleksandr Shabashyov served the Divine Liturgy on this hilltop on 9 October 1938.

Editor’s Note:
This is interesting in that there’re rumbles from the Centre regarding “realignment in the Diaspora in the near future”. That remains to be seen, but this seems to be an “olive branch” by the MP to the woollier elements in the ROCOR (besides being the “right thing to do”). In short, the Centre’s saying, “See, we’re not going to trample roughshod over the Right”. The MP honoured Sov volunteers in Spain; now, its honoured White Guard volunteers who fought for Franco. That’s even-handed… that IS “the way to go”. His Nibs does it again… we’re lucky to have him as our Patriarch.
