Wikipedia Will Go Offline Tomorrow in Protest Against Censorship Disguised as “Anti-Piracy Bill”

_____________________________

Wikipedia, the world’s largest free online encyclopaedia is set to go offline on 18 January for 24 hours, to protest against US anti-piracy legislation that could lead to censorship, it said on its website. The bills in the US Congress, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and the PROTECT-IP Act (PIPA), which the Senate and House are likely to debate later this month, claim to have the purpose of protecting intellectual property. However, the bills have sparked controversy among opponents who believe that the legislation could lead to censorship or the complete shutdown of some websites.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said the bills would “harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States. Today, Wikipedians from around the world have spoken about their opposition to this destructive legislation. This is an extraordinary action for our community to take… and while we regret having to prevent the world from having access to Wikipedia for even a second, we simply can’t ignore the fact that SOPA and PIPA endanger free speech both in the United States and abroad, and set a frightening precedent of Internet censorship for the world.”

The Mozilla browser, WordPress blog platform, and TwitPic photo upload site are also protesting against the new bills. The Motion Picture Association of America, which lobbied for the bills in order “to stop foreign-based thieves from stealing the hard work and creativity of millions of American workers”, said that the web sites’ protest campaign was “gimmicks and distortion”. On Saturday, the White House said that it would “not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cyber security risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet”.

Editor’s Note:

SOPA and PIPA are about censorship and power over the news… nothing else. It’s just like the ham-fisted TSA… it’s not about safety, it’s about power over powerless individuals (I pity the poor bastards who work for TSA… they’re pushed about by Bushie bureaucrats with the imaginations of hamsters).

If you vote for the Republican Party… THIS is what you’re voting for. Think on that…

15 December 2011. Ignore the Goofy “Text Enhance Ads”… I Did NOT Put Them There…

Today, apparently, WordPress starting putting goofy “Text Enhance” ads not only on this site, but on all sites. You can make your site ad-free by paying them off… is the head of WordPress a Rush Limbaugh listener? With this sort of sneaky money-grubbing, it sure looks like it. These goofballs are trying to be clever. The ads are disguised as links… caveat lector! IGNORE THEM. I’d be inclined to say, if you can, DON’T buy the products advertised. This is the first time I’ve seen this… is WordPress in the deep kimchi and doesn’t want to say so? Perspirin’ minds wanna know…

By the way, I get NOTHING from these ads… not a penny. Are these ads on all sites, or on just the most “popular” ones? I just thought that you’d like to know that…

Update:

If the “link” is underlined, it’s a fake… it’s an ad. If it’s not underlined, it’s a real link. As long as WordPress continues to do this, I’ll keep this pasted to the top of my blog. It’s one thing to run real ads… but to disguise them as links is low, nasty, and disingenuous. Either have real ads or have none at all.

1 December 2011. If You Were Using Zemanta on WordPress… Here’s How to Get it Back

Like so many others, I was using Zemanta to help me in finding links and tags. Well… it dropped off yesterday. Not to worry, though. If you want to get it back, click here, and it’ll get you to a site where you can download a Zemanta extension for the Google Chrome browser. You can also get it for Firefox, IE, and Safari. I was flummoxed for a while, but there’s a solution for it, after all. Pass the jug and cheer!

16 November 2011. False Warning from Trend Micro on VFR…

A friend warned me that a false warning is being passed by Trend Micro concerning this blog. I’ve pasted the warning below. THIS IS BOGUS. If this site were compromised, ALL of WordPress would be compromised… it’s quite that simple. There’s no malware on this site… I have SEVERAL anti-bug programmes installed, and, trust me, I’d know it if there were ANY problems (and there aren’t). In any case, VFR goes through the WordPress servers, and you can’t “contaminate” a particular blog… it’s technically impossible. Screwy world we live in, no?
