Russian troops withdrew from Gori in the direction of Tskhinvali, Major General Vyacheslav Borisov, the spokesman for the Defence Ministry, stated to Georgian journalists on the departure of the Russian forces from the city. “From tomorrow, the ordinary civil police shall be in control of the city. The previous reports that you heard, that the city was destroyed, that there is widespread looting, are all false and do not correspond to reality”, he emphasised. General Borisov said that he had taken Georgian officials and foreign ambassadors on a tour of Gori on Wednesday evening. “The buildings are safe and sound, and the water and electricity are on”, the general noted. “Some Russian troops shall be in the city for two more days in order to carry out a smooth transfer of control to the Georgian civil police, after which, they shall leave”, he stated. Aleksandr Maisuradze, the temporary head of administration for Gori municipality, told journalists that the civilian population could return home starting Thursday.
