Funeral for Valentina Tolkunova Tomorrow in Assumption church on Nikitskaya Street

Valentina Tolkunova (1946-2010), People’s Artist of the RSFSR, popular singer of the Soviet period… one of my faves, ‘tis true.

On Wednesday morning, the funeral of People’s Artist of the RSFSR Valentina Tolkunova will be held in the church of the Assumption on Nikitskaya Street in downtown Moscow. Then, at noon, a civil funeral will be held at the Variety Theatre, and the burial service at Troekurov Cemetery will follow that, a spokesman for the “Art” Creative Association told Interfax. Ms Tolkunova had led the “Art” Association since 1989. On Monday, Ms Tolkunova died in her 64th year at Moscow’s Botkin Hospital. According to preliminary reports, the cause of death was heart failure. In the Soviet era, she sang many popular songs.

In Moscow, during the 64th year of her life, the famous Russian singer Valentina Tolkunova died. According to LifeNews, “Today, at 06.00 MSK, Valentina Tolkunova fell into a coma, after which she was connected to artificial ventilation. The singer died at about 08.00 MSK”. After a concert on 16 February in Mogilev (Byelorussia), Ms Tolkunova was hospitalised in the intensive care unit at the local hospital. After discharge from that facility, she was moved to the Botkin Hospital. Shortly before her death, the singer refused chemotherapy. According to her son, she referred to the fact that she felt much better. However, this improvement was temporary. Her death was due to complications associated with her cancer, as reported by Novye Izvestia.

Her Life and Career:

Valentina Tolkunova was born 12 July 1946 in Armavir in Krasnodar Krai to a family of railroad workers. That year, her parents moved to Moscow. In 1964, she entered the Moscow State Institute of Culture in the choral conductor department. In 1966, she became a member of VIO-66 (vocal and instrumental ensemble led by Yuri Saulsky), where she worked for five years as a soloist-vocalist and sang along with the jazz ensemble. In 1971, she graduated from Gnessin Music College. After 1973, she was a soloist with Mosconcert. In 1987, she opened her own theatre, the Musical Drama Theatre of the “Art” Creative Association, becoming its artistic director. All of its performances were staged at the Rossiya Concert Hall.

Valentina Tolkunova performed dozens of songs, most of which were very popular. In musical films and theatre productions alone, she performed more than 300 songs. She won the TV contest “Song of the Year” 23 times. Ms Tolkunova was a People’s Artist of Russia (1987), Honoured Artist of Kalmykiya (1975), and laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Award (1980). Her many state and public awards include the Order of the Friendship of the Peoples (1996) and the Order of Merit (2006).
