Patriarch Bartholomew Asked the Clergy of the MP to Pray for the Reopening of the Orthodox Seminary on the Island of Halki

This photo of the meeting of the two patriarchs in Peredelkino on 25 May was released on the official MP website on 26 May… it was the last picture of Bart in a photo-album with high-res images on the site until 29 May (there were a few low-res images in between)… otherwise, there was no major photo coverage of the Valaam visit… interesting, no?

Patriarch Bartholomew Archontonis of Constantinople hoped that the Orthodox theological seminary on the island of Halki in Turkey would be reopened. “With all my heart, I bless the assembled brethren gathered here. Give love and care to our Mother Church of Constantinople, and I beg your prayers for the reopening of the theological school on the island of Halki”, Patriarch Bartholomew said on Wednesday during a visit to Holy Trinity Cathedral in the Danilovsky Monastery in Moscow. “We must make every effort to make sure that we can reopen this school, and I hope that our aspiration is not put to shame”, he said. Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev of Volokolamsk, the head of the MP DECR, and other MP clergymen, accompanied the Patriarch of Constantinople. Archimandrite Aleksei Polikarpov, the abbot of the monastery, met the patriarch and gave him a bouquet of flowers, according to the website of the DECR. Patriarch Bartholomew acknowledged that every time when he’s in a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity, his thoughts turn to the theological school on the island of Halki, which, since its founding in 1844 until its closure in 1971, was housed in the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. According to legend, St Photios founded this monastery; he also sent the brothers Equals-to-the-Apostles Ss Kirill and Methodios on a mission to the Slavic lands. As stated earlier this spring, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said that the government determined that “classes in the seminary should resume”. Prior to that, PACE deputies called on the Turkish authorities to allow the Patriarchate of Constantinople to reopen the theological school on the island of Halki as a division of the theological faculty of the University of Galatasaray. For his part, in Ankara, in July 2009, Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias, after meeting with Ali Bardakoğlu, the head of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs {the highest Islamic cleric in Turkey: editor}, stated, “The reopening of Halki Theological School would be an appropriate step”.

Editor’s Note:

THIS is why Bart is being so “meek n’ ‘umble”. Obviously, he needs KMG’s support in his effort to have an expeditious reopening of the Halki Seminary. He will do ANYTHING to this end. He has already cut the Ukrainian schismatics adrift… what about the EP interlopers in Estonia and the troublesome Parisian Russians? Bart will do what he must do to reopen Halki, and if that means that he must abandon the groups in Estonia and Paris to their fate, so be it (he has already given le sabot to the Ukrainians to garner Kirill’s favour). However, he (and his successors) will not forget the present slights (don’t be fooled by the wide smiles… neither of these men care for one another… it’s that obvious). The more one hears talk of Unity… you catch my drift. There are “interesting” times ahead, dear friends…

Note well that Kirill did NOT show up at Valaam… at least officially… Kirill offered liturgy at Optino on 27 May, and Bart was NOT with him… that’s rather curious, is it not? There’s no love lost between the principals in this visit, that’s for certain.
