Remains of Caravaggio Allegedly Found in an Italian Church

A Portrait of Michelangelo Caravaggio (Ottavio Leoni, 1621)

In a church in Tuscany in western Italy, scientists think that they found the remains of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. According to experts, the likelihood that the remains belong to the great painter is 85%, the BBC reported. Caravaggio was one of the greatest masters of the Baroque, he died at the age of 40 in 1610 and was buried in Tuscany.

St Jerome (Michelangelo da Caravaggio, 1606)… what good would I be if I posted something about Caravaggio without one of his paintings?

Another Schismatic Parish in the Ukraine Joined the Canonical Church

Bishop Evlogy Gutchenko of Sumy (1967- )… he’s eating his Wheaties! He’s doing the right thing… he’s allowing schismatics to repent and join the Church… but he’s NOT letting schismatic clergy in without vetting them first. That’s what the OCA and AOCANA should have done with the HOOMies and EOCers. It’s not too late… defrock ‘em and start afresh, I say. They’ve done enough damage…

Holy Protection parish in the village of Kiyanitsa in Sumy Oblast, which belonged to the self-proclaimed “Patriarchate of Kiev (UOC/KP)”, petitioned to become part of the canonical Church. On Thursday, the parishioners’ request to Bishop Evlogy Gutchenko of Sumy and Akhtyrsky was posted on the official website of the UOC/MP. Previously, the parish had been under the pastoral care of a UOC/KP “priest” from the nearby village of Yunakovka, Roman Kravets. As reported earlier, Mr Kravets was admitted to the canonical Church as a layman. Together with him, the parish in Yunakovka left the schism and joined itself to the Diocese of Sumy.

Request of a UOC (KP) Parish to Return to the Fold of the Church of Christ

Your Excellency,

His Grace Evlogy,

Bishop of Sumy and Akhtirka,

Administrator of the Diocese of Sumy

Ukrainian Orthodox Church/MP

Your Grace! Dear Vladyki!

We, the people of the village of Yunakovka in Sumy Raion in Sumy Oblast, call upon you to take us, with all due repentance, into the fold of the Diocese of Sumy in the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Some years ago, in despair over the fate of our church, which was in disrepair, we made a big mistake. We gave in to blandishments from the representatives of the “Patriarchate of Kiev”, so that they’d provide financial assistance for rebuilding our church building. They assured us that the so-called Patriarchate of Kiev was canonical and recognised in the Orthodox world, so we went over to this organisation. We fully realise our mistake and the sin that our schism burdened us with. That caused us to come to sincere repentance, please, take us into the fold of the canonical Church. At the same time, we inform you that we’re the actual community of the so-called “Patriarchate of Kiev” in the village of Yunakovka. In addition, we sincerely ask you not to leave without mercy the former “priest” of the UOC/KP, Roman Kravets. We think that he’d bring much good to the Orthodox Church, if it’s at all possible, please, accept him into the ranks of the clergy of the Diocese of Sumy of the UOC.

Sincerely, in heartfelt repentance, and in hope of your mercy,

Former members of the Nativity of the Mother of God Parish of the UOC/KP

Village of Yunakovka

“Priest” of the So-called UOC/KP Appealed to the Ruling Bishop of the Diocese of Sumy in Repentance and was Received as a Layman in the Orthodox Church

Your Excellency,

His Grace Evlogy,

Bishop of Sumy and Akhtirka

A Letter of Repentance

Your Grace!

On 26 October 2009, I was ordained a “priest” in the schismatical “Patriarchate of Kiev”. The last place of my ministry was the Nativity of the Mother of God parish in the village of Yunakovka in Sumy Raion. I realised that the so-called UOC/KP is a graceless community and don’t want to participate in the sin of schism. Please receive me into the fold of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the omofor of its First Hierarch, Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and all the Ukraine, and under your holy omofor as well.

Your Grace,

[I remain] Your Humble Novice,

Roman Nikolaevich Kravets

Orthodox Parishes in the Kuzbass to Commemorate those Killed in the Raspadskaya Mine Explosion

Scenes such as this (and the snap below) are all-too-familiar to Orthodox in America… all too many of our people paid the cost of industrialisation in the USA, whilst others reaped the benefits. Pray for the miners, today. Not only for those killed… but also those who shall go down into the bowels of the earth, again. They make our modern life possible…

Today, which is the 40th day after the tragic explosion at the Raspadskaya Mine in Mezhdurechensk, the parishes in the Kuzbass shall serve memorial services. “On the eve of this sorrowful day, our archpastor in the Kuzbass made a special appeal to everyone in the oblast. Vladyki said that the sacrificial heroism (подвиг) of the miners obliged us to pray for them and to continue to do everything that we could to prevent any more unnecessary deaths”, Yevgeni Kobyakov, a spokesman for the diocese, said. In turn, Nadezhda Gulyaeva, the press secretary of the Mezhdurechensk municipal administration, reported to Interfax that, at present, the city authorities are considering ways of honouring the memory of the miners killed since the beginning of the development of the Tomusinsky coalfield.

During the night of 9 May, two explosions rocked the Raspadskaya Mine, killing 67 people, 23 are miners still missing, and more than 130 were injured. The precise amount of damage is not yet calculated exactly… we only know that it is more than 5.7 billion roubles (183.802 million USD. 148.457 million Euros. 124.03 million UK Pounds). Reconstruction of the mine will take anywhere from several months to several years.
