A Greek Orthodox chapel on Prinkepos, an island near Istanbul
Today, a former Orthodox orphanage located on a small island off the coast of Istanbul is set to be returned to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by Turkish authorities in accordance with a European court ruling. A court ruling is expected today on the biggest of the nine islets that make up the Princes’ Islands, it shall overturn a previous ruling that transferred the building from the Patriarchate into the hands of Turkish authorities. According to sources, Patriarch Bartholomew Archontonis plans to order the rebuilding of the structure, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, and to create in its place a centre for the protection of the environment and the promotion of religious dialogue. Both are issues that Bartholomew, known as the “green patriarch” for his environmental initiatives, has promoted for years. In June, the European Court of Human Rights ordered Ankara to return the orphanage to the Patriarchate.

Editor’s Note:
The orphanage is on Prinkepos, the largest of the Princes’ Islands, it’s 5 sq km (2 sq mi) in area… not a small place at all. All motor vehicles, except for service vehicles such as ambulances, are forbidden on the island. The old patriarchal seminary is on one of the other Princes’ Islands, Khalki. The court ruling did NOT return the seminary (the object of much litigation on the part of the EP); the present decision is very much a “consolation prize”. Where’s Bart getting the money to pursue this court case (I think that was one of the things that he and KMG discussed in Peredelkino…)? He doesn’t have two red cents to rub together…
