Terminate the String on the Orthodox Forum…

A friend sent me the following:

If you would just as soon have everyone “cease and desist” with the Forum back-and-forth that concerns you… even if sympathetic… you’d say so, wouldn’t you?

I agree emphatically and completely. Please, stop discussing my private life and doings. It isn’t proper for decent Christian people to do such. That’s why Raymond Velencia is EVIL. That’s why Alexei Karlgut is EVIL. That’s why Piggy Iggy Burdikoff is EVIL. The Church protects our privacy… it’s why confession is private, kids. We’ve got to get out of the habit of thinking that we can drag private people’s lives into the public spotlight. For instance, I don’t GOOGLE anyone, ever. That’s your private and confidential information… for me to access that is to rape you, full stop. If you’ve said dumb things on the ‘net… join the club, so have I. Unfortunately, dumb things said on the ‘net have a half-life longer than U-238. You’ll note that I NEVER say, “Look at this dumb thing that Harry Coin posted on the Orthodox Forum two years ago”. I disagree with Harry Coin, I think that he’s chock fulla beans on more than one topic, but I don’t have the right to muck about in his private life. If I demand respect for my privacy, I must extend reciprocity, or I’m worse than a Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, or Rebecca Mansour.

Before we can act as Christians, we must learn decency… otherwise, we all know what the Apostle said concerning brazen gongs. We can disagree… yes. We can be emphatic… yes. We can have an old style Real Orthodox donnybrook with no holds barred… yes. However, there’s a line that can’t be crossed… let’s keep that in mind.

I’m going to work and walk away from all this until 17.30 EST… I want to see an e-mail in my inbox from one of my correspondents saying that the thread is terminated.

God have mercy on us all.

THIS is what it’s all about… Orthodoxy isn’t puffed-up seminary professors like John Behr or Andrei Psaryov… it isn’t self-satisfied clerical apparatchiki like Alexander Lebedeff or Piggy Iggy Burdikoff… it isn’t clueless konvertsy like Rod Dreher or Patrick Reardon… it isn’t hopelessly blown-up nebbishes like Freddy Matthewes-Green and Vassa Larina. Orthodoxy is thousands of unsung grounded faithful with goofy scarves, idiosyncratic hats, squeaky boots, old overcoats, bored kids, and a tremendous love of Their Lord. They don’t need books… they don’t need “strategic plans”… they don’t need “unofficial trips”… they only need to stand in God’s presence, light a candle, and offer up a heartfelt prayer.

That’s why I carry on… they’re worth fighting for, aren’t they?

Georgian Patriarch Ilya Baptised 560 Children

On Wednesday, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilya Ghudushauri-Shiolashvili Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia served at Holy Trinity Cathedral on the feastday of the Epiphany, after which, he greeted and blessed the people. In Georgia, the celebrations of the Baptism of Our Lord started the night before in Batumi on the Black Sea coast, where many believers took a traditional dip in the sea. After the service, His Holiness turned to the believers and called them to thank God both for their trials and for their blessings. “I’m confident that God will save Georgia and shall withdraw any invisible and visible threat from her”, he said. Tonight, he baptised 560 children (in all, Vladyki Ilya has baptised some 7,000 children). On 19 January 2007, His Holiness made a vow… he’d baptise the third and every subsequent child in a family. Many experts believe that this initiative was one of the causes that helped to improve the demographic indicators in the country over the past two years. In recent years, the population growth was close to 20,000 a year.
