Russian artist Liliya Karimova (1978- )… she paints in Christian churches… this is why Russia IS all of us…

Liliya Karimova, from Oktyabrsky in Chelyabinsk Oblast, is an academically-trained painter, who mainly does work in churches. Her works adorn Orthodox churches not only in Russia, but also in Mexico and Mongolia. She spoke to the newspaper Аргументы и факты (Arguments and Facts) on Monday, saying, “I like to create beauty! You know, in painting in such places, I’ve become more pure, learning to put aside my own thoughts. To properly adorn a church, you need much diligence and hard work”. Liliya is a Muslim. In 2008, before her first church commission, she went to the mosque to ask one of the mullahs for his opinion. He answered, “Well, my daughter, paint… first of all, it’s your job, after all; you do need to earn your living”.

Ash Wednesday for Catholics is 22 February, nine days from now… that means that Catholic Carnival is around the corner. That usually tells us that Maslenitsa‘s on the way a week later. This year, Catholic Easter’s on 8 April (yours truly’s birthday), and Orthodox Easter’s on 15 April. For me, Maslenitsa means that the worst of the winter is OVER. There’s only four more weeks left of it, more or less. Don’t forget, Christians share MANY things in common… whether we be Orthodox, Catholic, or Reformation Protestant. Ponder this… we have virtually NOTHING in common with Sectarians (they’re closer to Muslims than they are to us Christians, yet, they hate Mulsims with a passionate intensity… go figure). The yearly “Christian Cycle” is one thing that Christians share… from Orthodox to Catholics, from Evangelical Lutherans to Anglicans, from Calvinists to Mennonites. That’s why the “Born Agains” are so obviously NOT Christian… there’s no “rhythm” to their “year”.

This year, Venice was hit with freezing weather (see the image above), but the festivities are still rolling on, despite the lowest temps in eighty years. It takes MUCH more than mere cold to get life-affirming and ever-inventive guineas down. They’ll just put on their long undies and party hearty… that’s the ticket! If there’s one thing Italians know, they know that politics comes and goes, it’s an ephemeral thing, but life DOES go on, it doesn’t change, so, they know what to emphasise. As for me, I stand with the merry and well-grounded guineas… they know what’s what, who’s who, and what’s real (and what’s not)… and those aren’t bad things to know, are they?

13 February 2012. Who Woulda Thunk It… Bob Marley’s BIG in Serbia…

Serbian Bob Marley fans gather in front of a statue of him in Banatski Sokolac (South Banat District. Autonomous Province of Vojvodina). That’s why you can never be sure what’s lurking around the next corner… we live in a weird n’ wonderful world… mistrust those who attempt to make too much sense of it… they’re ALWAYS wrong. Especially mistrust those who say, “The Church teaches X”… usually, that’s the biggest load of hooey on the face of the planet. “Love God, and do what you will”…think on that and what it TRULY means.

NB:

Yes, yes, yes… Bobby McFerrin sings, Don’t Worry, Be Happy… but everyone thinks that Marley sang it (no reflection on Bobby McFerrin, who’s a talent in his own right), and it’s certainly in the Marley spirit. It’s about as Marley as you can get without being Marley, if you catch my drift (a tour-de-force on Mr McFerrin’s part, to be sure). Did I know it? Sure… but I was rushed last night… so, it STAYS. It’s REGGAE…

Street art in Kingston (Surrey County. Kingston and St Andrew Corporation) JAMAICA… get a load of that doobie… this’ll put some serious fear o’ the Livin’ God into those overly-earnest konvertsy… Bob loved God and he loved good weed, too. I stand with Bob… not the prune-faced and tight-arsed naysayers.
