For Orthodox, there comes a special time in the middle of Lent, a week dedicated to the veneration of the Cross. This brings to mind that the road to resurrection is precisely through the cross, and that salvation’s impossible without struggling with our sins and passions, without suffering. On Saturday evening, the priest brings out the Cross from the altar into the middle of the church and places it on a special stand for the people to venerate. In the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias served Vigil and brought out the cross for the believers to venerate. Today, on the Sunday of the Holy Cross, parishes will serve the Lenten Liturgy of St Basil the Great.
