This weekend, Nicky and I decided to take a motor up into the Adirondacks. Well… it turned into the “Motor from Hell”. We were driving home in the mid-afternoon Sunday when the car suddenly started coughing and moving in “fits and jerks”. It took four jumps” from four different people to get back to Schuylerville NY (which is civilisation). The car’s final conk-out was in front of an auto repair shop. It was Sunday afternoon at 16.00… no one was open. One of the neighbours said that the shop opened at 07.30 on Monday. We didn’t have the money for a motel; we had enough to fix the car, if necessary, that was more important, in the greater scheme of things.
So, of course, we “camped out” in the car overnight. Thank God, it wasn’t mid-winter, and there was a Stewart’s Shop (gas/convenience/dairy outlet in our part of Northeast NY State) on the next block; at least, one didn’t have to squat in the bushes (a small blessing, that). The mechanic showed up a little after seven, he looked at the car, and said that we had a crank alternator. He gave us a full charge gratis, but we didn’t have the money for a new alternator. To say that the trip back to Albany was nerve-wracking is an understatement. The car didn’t make it all the way home, but we got to Western and North Allen, which was on a direct bus route home. I took the groceries and went home, and Nicky took the car to the shop. We busted down right by the cops, which means that he didn’t wait long for aid.
That’s why there wasn’t any posting this weekend. However, we’re in one piece and back home. Thank God for small favours… be good, all of y’all…
