Situation Returning to Normal in Damascus


The situation is gradually getting back to normal in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Tensions eased after Syrian Army units drove rebels from the densely-populated districts of al-Midan and al-Kadam. The week-long fighting gravely damaged city infrastructure, with the municipal government in the Damascus outskirts put out of operation due to violence. The authorities are distributing drinking water, and bakeries open at night, given that the Muslim fast of Ramadan has begun. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN mission in Syria by another 30 days to monitor the way the violence in the Arab country. The mission’s initial mandate expired on Friday, 20 July. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin pointed up the importance of the fact that the document features an appeal to both parties to the conflict to end the violence.
