More Russians Believe in Afterlife over Two Decades

According to an opinion poll conducted by the Levada Centre, far more Russians believe in heaven and hell today than two decades ago. 53 percent of Russians believe in heaven, at least to a certain extent, which is a 24-percent increase on 1991. 49 percent of Russians believe in hell, 25 percent more than 21 years ago. 19 percent more of those polled said they believe in religious miracles (52 percent in 2012 and 33 percent in 1991). 59 percent said they believed in bad luck spells, two percent less than in 2010. Levada conducted the poll on 10-13 August 2012, amongst 1,601 adults aged 18 and older in 130 localities of 45 Russian regions. The statistical margin of error doesn’t exceed 3.4 percent.
