Russia Stands Firm in Schneerson Library Dispute

00 Jewish book. 26.02.13

______________________________

Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky said that Russia has solid legal grounds to keep the Schneerson Library in its possession. The American-based Hasidic movement rejected President Putin’s proposal to place the collection of books and religious documents in the European Tolerance Centre in Moscow. The situation has only deteriorated since the dispute over the Schneerson Library first broke out in the late 1980s. The Agudas Chasidei Chabad, the umbrella organisation for the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement, rejected Moscow’s compromise on offering free access to the books and manuscripts of the Schneerson collection. Actually, they’re already available at the Russian State Library. The Hasidic movement wants the entire collection in its ownership.

In January 2013, a US Federal Court in Washington DC ruled that Russia should pay 50,000 USD (1.534 million Roubles. 38,300 Euros. 33,100 UK Pounds) per day in fines unless it returns the collection. In response, President Putin suggested placing the archive in the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre in Moscow. He also expressed his regret over the dispute reaching the point of confrontation, adding that the library doesn’t belong to a particular Jewish community, noting, “If we allow this national asset to go to anyone, we’d open a Pandora’s Box. If Russia started to comply with such lawsuits, claims would start streaming in”.

The Schneerson Library is a collection of old Jewish books and manuscripts gathered by Rav Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn in the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th century. The Bolsheviks nationalised part of the collection in 1918 and eventually became part of the Russian State Library collection. Schneersohn managed to take the other part of the collection out of the USSR during his emigration in the 1930s. Later, the Nazis seized about 25,000 pages of manuscripts from the collection, then, the Red Army captured them and handed them over to the Russian State Military Archive. Rav Schneersohn died in 1950; he left no instructions on the disposition of the library after his death.

In August 2010, the issue came to the forefront again when Judge Royce Lamberth in a US District Court in Washington DC ruled that Russia should hand over the Schneerson archive to the American-based Hasidic movement. Two years later, the District Court issued a ruling assessing a fine against Russia for not turning over the library. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MID) rejected all claims made by Hasidic organisations, describing the decision of the American court “legally unfounded”. The MID also recommended that the Russian State Library to fine the Library of Congress for not returning seven books from the Schneerson collection loaned to Washington in 1994. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York cancelled plans to send 35 works by the early-20th century designer Paul Poiret to an exhibition in the Moscow Kremlin. Russia isn’t going to organise any exhibitions in the USA, either. There’s no progress in the talks over the Schneerson library, but a scandalous battle in courts is already under way.

Editor’s Note:

As I’ve noted before, you can’t sue for ownership of property that you never owned in the first place. The library was nationalised; that’s the end of the story. Remember WHY the Hasids want the books… they want to restrict access to them and hog them for themselves. Why do I dislike Hasids? All too often, they live up to the stereotype of the insular, greedy, and grasping Jew… increasing the level of anti-Semitism in the world. That’s sad… innocents suffer for their nastiness. President Putin’s right in this one… the Schneerson Library is a precious resource for ALL of us… it’s not the plaything of a narrow-minded and intransigent little sect. It’s enough to make one hurl in disgust…

By the way, Judge Royce Lamberth is a fanatic appointed by Slobberin’ Ronnie… an old Cold Warrior living in the past, but feeling his oats in having an opportunity to kick “those godless commie Rooshians” (is he one of Potapov’s pals? Perspirin’ minds wanna know…).

Russian Wrestling Champ Gives Olympic Gold Back To IOC in Protest

00 Sagid Murtazaliev. Olympic Champion. 26.02

______________________________

Russian Olympic champion Sagid Murtazaliev said that he sent his wrestling gold back to the International Olympic Committee following its decision to drop wrestling from the Games. On Tuesday, he told reporters, “The decision to return the medal was a tough one, but after giving it some thought, I followed suit with the legendary Bulgarian wrestler Valentin Yordanov”. He wrote in a letter to IOC President Jacques Rogge, “I did it to protest the recent IOC Executive Board’s recommendations to cut wrestling from the Olympics”. On 11 February, the IOC Committee ruled in Lausanne to exclude wrestling from the 2020 Olympic Games, prompting Bulgarian Valentin Yordanov, a champion from the 1996 Atlanta Games, to sent back his gold medal.

Editor’s Note:

You can’t have a REAL Olympics without ‘rasslin’. It’s one of the most ancient sports; it was one of the most popular and breathtaking events in the ancient Olympics in Classical Greece. It’s still a gripping contest (sorry for the pun, I couldn’t resist it)… as anyone who loves sport can tell you. For all that’s holy, c’ mon, wrestling was the final decisive event in the ancient pentathlon. Sheesh… to have an Olympics without wrestling is like having a meal without salt n’ pepper… bland… tasteless… YECH! Without wrestling, you have a “Wussy Olympics”… think on that one. They should bring back wrestling… and apologise for being such idiots. The IOC stuck their foot in it, big-time… what a buncha maroons.

Lavrov sez Gay Propaganda Ban “Not Discrimination”

lavrov2

______________________________

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the ban on “gay propaganda” amongst minors, currently under review in the RF Gosduma, doesn’t infringe on human rights… unlike “gay propaganda” itself, saying, “We’re not discriminating against anyone, we just don’t want reverse discrimination, when one group of citizens gets the right to aggressively impose their values, unsupported by most of the population, especially on children”. He spoke after his Dutch counterpart Frans Timmermans urged the lower chamber of the RF Federal Assembly, the RF Gosduma, to drop the controversial bill on gay propaganda because it might violate international agreements on human rights. Lavrov replied, speaking at a press conference after a meeting with Timmermans, “We don’t have a single global or pan-European obligation to allow gay propaganda”. He pointed up that Russia fulfilled all of its humanitarian obligations regarding same-sex relations when it decriminalised male homosexual contact in 1993. Lavrov noted that instead of campaigning for Russian gays, the EU should deal with flagrant rights violations on its own turf, most notably the case regarding “non-citizens” in Estonia and Latvia, who were denied citizenship after these countries declared independence from the USSR.

The Gosduma voted 388 to one in support of the “gay propaganda” ban in the first of three required readings in late January. Several dozen opponents and supporters of the bill marked the occasion with violent clashes outside the Gosduma building in central Moscow. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton criticised the bill after the first reading, saying it could infringe human rights. Russian lawmakers are currently working on a legal definition of “gay propaganda” ahead of the crucial second reading, which wouldn’t take place before late May. The ban in its current form envisages fines of 4,000 to 500,000 roubles (130 to 16,290 USD. 100 to 12,480 Euros. 85 to 10,750 UK Pounds) for individuals and organisations trying to convince minors of the benefits of same-sex relations.

Eleven of 83 Russian oblast-level entities installed similar bans since 2006; many of them also cover bisexual and transsexual relations, which aren’t part of the federal bill. The list of entities includes St Petersburg, where conservative activists unsuccessfully sued pop star Madonna last year for “gay propaganda” over her speaking out in support of the city’s gays during a show in August. A poll by VTsIOM last April showed that 94 percent of Russians never encountered gay propaganda, but 86 percent support a ban on it. The nationwide poll covered 1,600 respondents and had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points. Russian authorities have never sanctioned a gay pride rally, although LGBT activists have applied for permits in Moscow since 2006. Last May, the St Petersburg authorities permitted a rally against homophobia, but dozens of masked thugs, all of whom evaded arrest, attacked its participants.

Editor’s Note:

Sergei Viktorovich speaks the plain truth. Russia isn’t recriminalising homosexuality… the bill has no provisions for imprisonment. The Church isn’t calling for the criminalisation of homosexuality, either. As HH said, “The Church respects all human decisions, including those of sexual orientation”. What the Church and state ARE calling for is a criminalisation of homosexual propaganda, strictly-defined as the suborning or influencing of minors. Note well that the St Petersburg lawsuit against Madonna failed. That’s because it failed the test of meeting the law’s definition. You simply can’t harass gays with a charge of “homosexual propaganda”; you have to bring evidence that they actually tried to influence a minor child.

Therefore, disregard the caterwauls that you hear from the konvertsy regarding homosexuality and the Church. They’re ignorant and they don’t speak the Church’s mind nor express its dogmatic theology (their “view” is made up of equal parts of fantasy, half-digested theologumenae, and sectarian notions). Besides which, they’re fanatics of the worst sort. Fr Andrew Phillips spoke well on that topic here. He truly said:

This is true even of the lesser forms of fanaticism… schism, sectarianism, ”guruism”, and so-called “traditionalism”. Fanatical movements are often made up of individuals with unhappy, unbalanced, and unstable childhoods. So are sects and cults founded. The first characteristic in these is dissatisfaction… nothing else is good enough; the members can’t accept what others accept. They are “different” and “better” than others are, as can be seen in special dress, jargon, or practises, which are often exotic. In fanaticism, there’s much anti-social introversion, self-centredness, and self-discussion, with condemnation of others and self-imposed exaltation and isolation, the failure to integrate. This is all the pride of delusion.

That truly describes James Paffhausen, Rod Dreher, the Monomakhos lot, and the HOOMie cultists, none of whom are truly Orthodox in their heart-of-hearts. That’s why they want a crusade against gays. By the way, a “crusade” is profoundly un-Orthodox… haven’t they learnt that? Obviously, not… it does take all kinds, doesn’t it? Pass me the jug…
