16 June 2013. Some of My Favourite Things… “Bring ‘Em Home!”

00 US Soldier in Afghanistan. 4 April 2012

THIS is what the Republican anti-life programme stands for… any questions? Bring ’em home! There’s something that you can bank on… the Republican oligarchs’ kids aren’t bleeding for their profits. It’s evil… and all their mewling about “Pro-Life” can’t change it…

Sadly, this is still relevant. Like Pete, I’m no pacifist. If some oppressor, either foreign or domestic, were to come, I’d be one of the fighters, you bet! My Zaporozhian dander would be up, and I wouldn’t be alone! I’d do what I could, you could count on that. Bring our boys home… let no more of our lovely working-class kids die for the grasping McMansion pukes and their profits. If we ended the wars and returned taxation on the rich to Pre-Bush levels, we’d have the debt spent down WITHOUT cutting the social safety net. That’s why I stand proud as a Democratic Socialist.

You can have the oligarchs’ wars or you can have prosperity for all. It’s our choice…

16 June 2013. Is There Hope for Iran?

00 What Would Jesus Do. Terry Jones. Political Cartoon. 9.12

THIS is what Our Lord Christ thinks of the anti-Muslim haters…

A friend wrote me:

I have some hope that Rouhani might actually make a difference. He has the cred to have standing with the powers-that-be in Tehran, but also may find a way to dialogue with the West in a way that’s neither obsequious nor terminally dysfunctional (like Ahmadinejad). Fingers crossed and candles lit; may God shed his grace on all of us and bring an honourable and peaceful end to the ridiculous nuclear stand-off. The Iranian people deserve it.

I quite agree. As a god-fearing Christian, I oppose Potapov, Dreher, Paffhausen, Webster, and Jacobses, who support the American demonisation of Iran, neocon warmongering throughout the world, and rightwing lunacy in general. All decent people hate their vicious and god-denying drivel (may God offer them “the onion”, though)…

Doesn’t it get DISCOURAGING?

One of the Cabinet opined:

Those guys are so maddeningly and bafflingly STUPID!  They can’t see what would serve themselves or the Church at large, but must contest or ignore every point until it festers into utter calamity.

That says it better than I ever could. Reminds you of the old song, Where have all the flowers gone? They won’t “man up” even if their lives depended on it. God do help us…

The Price of Resistance

Sergei Yolkin

St Petersburg has reintroduced the Soviet-era practise of дружинники (druzhinniki). That’s a tough word to “English”. Literally, it’s “companions”… they’re ordinary sorts who patrol the streets to supplement beat cops. I guess that the only way to say it would be “civilian street patrols”, but it loses a great deal of the flavour of the Russian original, which implies that the druzhinniki are a group of mates familiar with one another, who’re patrolling their neighbourhood to ensure its safety.

By the way, these aren’t huge fines… 500 Roubles is 16.75 USD (11.75 Euros. 10 UK Pounds), and 300 Roubles is 9.50 USD (7 Euros. 6 UK Pounds). I can see why Yolkin doubts whether they’ll be effective at all.

The St Petersburg Municipal Duma introduced fines for resisting civilian street patrolsSergei Yolkin wonders how that’ll scare off those who’d resist them.
