MP Organises Church-Wide Collection for Aid to Syria

In connection with the tragic events in Syria, Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias called on believers to help the victims of the armed conflict there, saying, “I ask you to follow the call of Christ to help our fellow man, that is, those who’re in particular need of support and assistance at present. To this end, I bless in all MP parishes to organise fundraisers this Sunday to help the needy in Syria“. This was contained in a special patriarchal encyclical circulated by the MP Information Department on Tuesday.

As His Holiness pointed up, a significant part of the Syrian people are Orthodox, and Damascus is the centre of one of the oldest Orthodox patriarchates (Antioch and all the East). He said, “Now, on the streets of a city that remembers the Holy Apostle Paul, which saw the deeds and writings of ancient saints, human blood is shed”. Patriarch Kirill stated that Christians and Muslims lived in this biblical land together in peace, but today we see desecrated holy places, profaned churches, and the expulsion of Christians from their homes. They often suffer persecution; sometimes, they’re tortured and killed.

Patriarch Kirill noted, “Recently, our nation traversed a similar route. During the Revolution, the Civil War, and the Persecution of the Church, thousands of our compatriots died. We mustn’t stand by in indifference as, once again, we see innocent blood shed. We can’t stop this war, but we can earnestly pray for an early end to it, and to help the suffering people, including our brother Christians”. Monies collected in all MP dioceses will go into the accounts of the MP Department for Church Charity and Social Service, which will coordinate the collection of donations. When the fundraising action is complete, the monies raised will go to the Patriarchate of Antioch and all the East.

Editor’s Note:

There was no announcement or news item on this important fund drive on either the ROCOR official website or oca.org. ROCOR is an integral part of the MP; obviously, it received the encyclical. Is it going to participate in this worthy endeavour? The OCA is a dependency of the MP in all but name; it was silent about this action as well. Mark this down well… Potapov screams about Stalin and repeats all the lunacies of the Washington Times crowd… yet, he didn’t see to it that HH’s appeal got airtime. It tells you much about him and his ilk, no?

God willing, individual parishes of the ROCOR and OCA will choose to take part in this God-pleasing action. I certainly hope so…
