On Saturday, the local MVD said that two self-identified Russian leftists face charges of torching a church in the city of Nizhny Novgorod in protest against a recent pro-church law. The MVD website stated that the duo pelted an Orthodox church with a Molotov cocktail last week. However, earlier reports said that the Molotov cocktail only burned one windowsill. The cops said that the attackers were members of the unregistered Left Front, a political vehicle for leftist leader Sergei Udaltsov, without providing their names. The suspects said that they were protesting against last month’s law that introduces punishments for offending “religious believers’ feelings”.
The opposition claimed the bill infringed non-believers’ rights, and linked it to the Church’s ideological alliance with President Vladimir Putin, whose re-election bid last year was endorsed by church head Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev. The city’s branch of the Left Front identified one of the suspects as group member Dmitri Kapelyush and confirmed that he plead guilty. On its page on the social network Vk.com, the Left Front said, “We don’t support such attacks… and we regret that we failed to explain it to our comrade”.
Earlier, the opposition website Kasparov.ru said that Kapelyush claimed that city police repeatedly threatened to fabricate a case against him. The church hasn’t commented on the case. Last year, it supported criminal persecution of three opposition members of the punk band Pussy Riot who performed an anti-Putin song in a cathedral, and who each received a two-year prison sentence. Puzzlingly, the perps weren’t accused of violating the law they were protesting against… police only charged them with deliberate damage of property, not offending believers’ feelings.

There are some zapadniki on the English side of RIA… they tried to spin this as a Left Front attack. It wasn’t… it was just cracked nutters, who claimed the Left Front’s mantle, that’s all. Note well that the Left Front distanced itself from the action and from the perps rather smartly. The Left isn’t anti-Christian (or anti-religious in general), but the Right IS anti-Christian… and the most virulently anti-Christian sorts are those who loudly proclaim themselves “Christians”… fancy that…
