On Saturday, during a pastoral visit, at a meeting with students of higher educational institutions of Smolensk Oblast, Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias urged his listeners to protect Russia‘s sovereignty against external attempts to weaken it. He noted, “Sovereignty isn’t just a formality… real sovereignty consists in the ability to defend one’s standpoints in the international arena, even if they don’t coincide with the opinion of powerful factions abroad”. In his opinion, real sovereignty is the ability to follow one’s own path, based on one’s own value system. His Holiness said, “Today, our sovereignty irritates many in the world”, citing as an example a statement of a foreign politician, “For us to have peace in the world, we need you to reformat yourself”. Patriarch Kirill said to his audience, “That is, they want us to become like they are”. He told his audience that the most effective way to avoid such a turn of events was to bring up their children in the spirit of traditional Russian morality.
