Russian Delegation to Meet Gitmo Prisoner

00 Uncle Sam ravaged by GOP... political cartoon. 07.12

______________________________

On Friday, Konstantin Dolgov, MID RF Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, said that a Russian delegation would visit the American military prison at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba in January to meet a Russian imprisoned there for over a decade. The delegation will meet on 17 January with Ravil Mingazov, a former Russian soldier. Dolgov said that the delegation would discuss Mingazov’s detention to try to alter his situation, including possibly returning him to Russia, saying, “We’d use this visit and put the question bluntly so that this special facility would be closed as soon as possible”, noting that the Americans delayed the long-discussed meeting for “many months, if not years” because conditions for the visit weren’t agreed upon with the USA.

Mingazov, incarcerated at Guantánamo in October 2002, but the Americans never charged him with a crime. American military documents from Guantánamo list him as a member of the “al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan”, and claim that he spent time living in Central Asia before linking up with Islamist militants in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan, where they say that he received explosives training. A judge ordered his release in May 2010 under a writ of habeas corpus; it’s a safeguard in the English legal system requiring the authorities to deliver a person under arrest before a judge or into a court.

Since it’s founding in 2002, the Guantánamo Bay detention camp was the target of criticism by human rights activists and many international government officials, who condemned its controversial interrogation methods and the dubious legality of holding prisoners indefinitely without charging them with crimes. The USA defended the prison as a necessary measure for dangerous prisoners who pose a serious threat to American and international security. US President Barack Obama promised to close down the camp whilst campaigning in 2008, but ran into congressional opposition in negotiating the transfer of prisoners to other prisons in the USA and abroad. As of December 2013, the US Defense Department said that 158 prisoners remain in Guantánamo Bay.

Editor’s Note:

Let’s not be coy… the Republican Party insists on the Gitmo Gulag‘s continuance… just as it insists on the legality of the NSA domestic spying (“We’re only protecting you”), the TSA Gestapo (“Have you had your grope today?”), the needless “Department of Homeland Security” (the American “Committee for State Security“… do note the similar terminology), and torture at black sites (“They’re only wog terrorists, so, who cares?”). They’ve used perversions of congressional rules to keep these repressive means alive… no doubt, to redouble them if they got back into power. Mark it down… the Republican Party advocates torture, extralegal imprisonment, domestic spying, invasive groping of all airline passengers, permanent war in foreign parts, and fear-mongering (the Bushies did all of that and more). Bear that in mind when you mark your ballot in November 2014. A vote against the Republicans is a vote for freedom. Don’t forget, the Republicans brought us the McCarthy era and the Bush dictatorship (after all, they made passports obligatory for travel to Canada, after decades of free movement… that’s called repression, kids). It’s time to oppose these feral and violent sorts… yes, God DOES will it…

Mikhail Timofeyevich was an Orthodox Christian. Light a candle in his memory at Liturgy, ask your priest to mention his name in the Proskomidi, and have Pannikhida said for him. That’s what real Christians do, and that’s what our duty is. That’s what God asks of us… not waving signs or condemning this one or that one. “Save your own soul and thousands will be saved about you“… that’s the ticket.

The burial of Russia’s most famous small-arms designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov took place Friday at a new military cemetery outside Moscow. Mikhail Timofeyevich died Monday at the age of 94. President Vladimir Putin, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, and a host of other high-ranking officials came to pay their respects at the funeral, held with full state honours at the Federal Military Memorial Complex in Mytishchi Raion. Putin laid red roses on the coffin and offered condolences to Kalashnikov’s family members. The military paid a fitting last tribute to Kalashnikov with salvoes fired from the AK-47, the iconic assault rifle that he designed, and which brought him lasting fame. At the funeral, Yelena Kalashnikova, daughter of the famed weapons designer, said that her father dedicated his whole life to the service of the Motherland and “never thought of anything else”. Initial plans called for Kalashnikov’s burial to take place in his hometown of Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurt Republic. However, the Russian leadership decided that the burial of a man who made such a significant contribution to the country’s defence and who held the title of Hero of Russia, amongst other honours, should be in a more prominent place. Over 60,000 people paid their last respects to Kalashnikov in two days of mourning in Izhevsk before the taking of his coffin to Moscow by plane on Thursday.

The Kalashnikov Group, the newly-formed small-arms holding that still manufactures derivatives of the AK-47, said that it plans to turn Kalashnikov’s office into a small museum and to set up an award bearing his name to honour its best branches and employees. Already, Izhevsk has a dedicated Kalashnikov museum, opened in 2004, that includes a range where visitors can fire air gun copies of AK series weapons on a range. An estimated 100 million AK-47s were built worldwide since it went into mass production in February 1947. In at least 55 countries, armed forces, guerilla groups, terrorists, and even common thugs still favour the reliable and easy-to-use assault rifle. Thirty countries, including Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Finland, India, Israel, the Netherlands, Sweden, and South Africa, make derivatives of the AK-47, which has a vodka and even a rap song named after it.

27 December 2013. Priest in Hospital Needs Your Prayers

00 Prayer in an Orthodox Church in Cairo. Orthodox Woman

______________________________

Christians don’t ask “who” someone is when they’re in hospital… they light a candle and pray, for that’s what Christians do. Christian love doesn’t mean that one paints a phoney smile on one’s face or that one gives the guilty a “Get Out Out of Jail Free” card. It doesn’t mean that one calls “black” “white” or vice versa. It DOES mean that one prays sincerely for the recovery of everyone, no exceptions (believers, non-believers, it doesn’t matter, kids). God DOES offer “the onion” to ALL of us… we’d do well to remember that.

Say a prayer for Fr Igor Burdikoff… he had a stroke and is in rehab. Light a candle when you go to Liturgy on Sunday and ask your priest to mention him at the Proskomidi. That’s what Christians do, and that’s that.
