On Wednesday, Cuban President Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz, at a gala ceremony in Santiago de Cuba devoted to the 55th anniversary of the victory of the Cuban Revolution, said that Cuba faces a never-ending campaign of political and ideological subversion aiming to destroy socialism from the inside. He said that outside parties want to inculcate neoliberalism in people’s consciousness, to restore neocolonial capitalism. He said that campaigns of this kind target the very foundations of the socialist revolution through manipulating history and by minimising the overall crisis in the capitalist system. It aims to instil individualism and egotism, to spread mercantile thinking to the detriment of national values, identity, and culture. The campaign tries to peddle the so-called advantages of “ignoring ideology and social mentality” to young people to break links between Cuba’s historic leadership and the new generation, as well as to produce hesitancy and pessimism towards the future”. However, President Castro expressed the hope that the revolution would emerge victorious from this ideological battle. He pointed up the strength and patriotism of Cuban cultural figures, artistic performers, academics, and students.
The official gala ceremony at Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Park marked the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. The building from which Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz declared on 1 January 1959 that the rebels had won over the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar is in the park. About 3,500 people, including veterans of the Revolution, Communist Party of Cuba leaders, and high government officials attended the ceremony.
