Archbishop Rastislav Gont of Prešov Elected First Hierarch of the Orthodox Church of Czechia and Slovakia

00 Metropolitan Rastislav Gont of Prešov PCČKS. 13.01.14

______________________________

On 11 January 2014 in Prešov (Slovakia), the 13th (extraordinary) Sobor of the Orthodox Church of Czechia and Slovakia (PCČZS/PCČKS) took place. The Sobor endorsed the PCČZS Holy Synod decision to elevate Bishop Jáchym Hrdý as Archbishop of Prague and all Czechia. Then, under the PCČZS Charter, the Sobor elected Archbishop Rаstislav Gont of Prešov as Metropolitan of all Czechia and Slovakia by an absolute majority. The PCČZS Sobor is the highest doctrinal, constituent, administrative, and ecclesiastical authority of this canonical Local Church. His Holiness Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russias sent congratulations to Archbishop Rаstislav of Prešov, to mark the latter’s election as First Hierarch of the PCČZS.

Editor’s Note:

Archbishop Jáchym studied at the MDA and was a member of the brotherhood at the Trinity-St Sergei Lavra. Metropolitan Rаstislav studied at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Both are young men… Rastislav is 35, Jáchym is 40 (the other two PCČZS hierarchs are Archbishop Juraj Stránský of Michalovsko-Košická (aged 34) and Archbishop Simeon Jakovljević of Olomouck-Brno (aged 88)). By all accounts, the internal tussle is over. Two-thirds of the PCČZS parishes are in Slovakia, mainly in the eastern part of the country, in the Carpathian uplands.
