I still call myself a communist, because communism is no more what Russia made of it than Christianity is what the churches make of it. But if by some freak of history communism had caught up with this country, I would’ve been one of the first people thrown in jail.
The world would never amount to a hill of beans if people didn’t use their imaginations to think of the impossible.
The world will be saved by people fighting for their homes.
The key to the future of the world is finding the optimistic stories and letting them be known.

If you wish official obituaries, they’re all over the web. Go there. As for me, I remember seeing Pete perform in the ’70s… a much younger and more vigorous man in his fifties. This was a man who told the McCarthyitescumballs in Congress:
I’m not going to answer any questions as to my association, my philosophical or religious beliefs or my political beliefs, or how I voted in any election, or any of these private affairs. I think these are very improper questions for any American to be asked, especially under such compulsion as this.

Sadly enough, the McCarthyite spirit isn’t dead… one can see it in Pat Robertson, Paul Ryan, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Scott Walker, and Michelle Bachmann (and some well-known rightwing Orthodox clergy that all of us know all too well). The fight isn’t over… but THE DREAM HASN’T DIED EITHER. Pete wouldn’t have wanted that. Let’s keep it simple… fight Neoliberalism (especially, the Republicans) or find your freedom to live unmolested trampled into the mud. After all, they’re only concerned with your soul (we’ll force religion and morals on you at sword-point)… they’re only doing it for your own good (you don’t deserve more pay, you’d only drink it away)… oh, don’t forget to kiss up to your betters at the country club.
Pete didn’t stand for that, and neither do I. Call me a commie, that’s OK… they called Pete that, too. Emulate Pete… spit in their eye and tell ’em to go to hell. You’ll feel 100 percent better about yourself, I guarantee…
