Police Disperse Anti-Austerity Protesters with Water Cannons in Brussels

00 trades union rally in Brussel. 04.04.14

Around 15,000 people participated in a European Trade Union Confederation anti-austerity rally in Brussels. Activists threw oranges and cobblestones at police, who closed off the area to traffic and fired water cannons at demonstrators. Bernadette Segol, the General Secretary of ETUC, said, “Our message is simple; it’s one which EU leaders don’t want to hear… that their policies for dealing with the financial crisis aren’t enough, they’ve caused a mounting social and economic crisis. Our message is that austerity isn’t working”. She pointed up that although EU leaders acted as if the crisis was over, “they haven’t yet tackled the crisis of unemployment and poverty”.

Editor:

The Belgian police acted more harshly than the Ukrainian police did… does that mean that the EU will demand that the Belgian government resign and depose the King and Prime Minister in a CIA-fomented coup? Will the EU call the Belgian government “illegitimate” for using force against peaceful protestors (in its “home city”, no less!)? Methinks that not only do double standards exist in the West; in particular, they’re remarkably blatant and corrosive in the USA. After all, Rick Perry puts more people to death in a year than Yanukovich did in his entire term (in fact, his cosiness to tycoons and his reputation for corruption exceeds that of “The Family” in the Ukraine… fancy that)… I’d ask, “Why isn’t Mr Perry deposed for his callous disregard of human rights? Why isn’t Texas invaded for its tolerance and fostering of a culture of violence, both in the private and the state sphere?” Yes, indeed…

None dare call it hypocrisy…
