Gabriel Avramidis of the Independent Greeks (ANEL) bloc told TASS that Greece must adjust its geopolitical priorities and turn towards Russia. ANEL joined in a coalition government with the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), which won last Sunday’s parliamentary election. Avramidis stated that rethinking Greece’s geopolitical alliances was important to ANEL leader Panos Kammenos. Avramidis said, “We believe that [Greece] should make a geopolitical turn towards the Russian Federation. It isn’t coincidental that Panos Kammenos visited Moscow on 15 January, meeting members of the ruling party, including A K Pushkov, the Chairman of the RF Gosduma Committee on Foreign Affairs. The signals that we’ve already received are very important. Greek television and other media didn’t publicise the statement of Russian Minister of Agriculture N V Fyodorov that if Greece comes under EU pressure, Russia is ready to lift the embargo and begin to buy Greek agricultural products with a 30-year treaty”. Avramidis also described recent statements that Russia plans to build a gas pipeline to supply natural gas to Central and Eastern Europe via Turkey and Greece, and to end the transit of Russian gas to Europe through the Ukraine by 2019 as very important. He said, “These are important issues that we’d advance as a political party. We support the strengthening of relations with Russia in this area”.
