The LNR and DNR withdrew their proposed amendments to the Ukrainian Constitution mentioning the Crimea and Sevastopol. DNR and LNR representatives D V Pushilin and V N Deinego said in a joint statement, “The DNR and LNR consider the Crimea to be an integral part of Russia. Moreover, ideally, our Republics also would like to join the Russian Federation. However, we can only determine the status of the DNR and LNR within the parameters of the Minsk agreements. We want to emphasise that our ally Russia supports these agreements. These agreements state that we should determine the status of the Donbass through amendments to the Ukrainian Constitution. Yet, the Ukrainian Constitution has articles about the Crimea. We note that we mentioned the Crimea only in the technical and legal sense. No one can make something out of that, for the simple reason that the Crimea is not, and cannot be a subject of negotiations in Minsk. However, taking into account Ukrainian efforts to ratchet up propaganda to inflate insignificant formalities into a political concession, we decided to withdraw proposals referring to the Crimean peninsula. To avoid any further speculation on this subject, we’re withdrawing suggested draft amendments to the Ukrainian Constitution that mention the Crimea and Sevastopol. Nevertheless, we invite the Ukraine to adopt our remaining draft amendments without further delay”.
