This is one of the most-recognisable images in the Russian visual culture. All Russians know this image… like all “stock images”, it’s seen many spoofs, satires, and goofs. In addition, many use it to bring forward a serious point. In this adaptation, the main subject wears a Novorossiya flag-pin and refuses a Ukrainian passport (in Soviet and post-Soviet usage, “passport” usually means an internal personal-identity document, not a foreign-travel document). It’s an emphatic rejection of not only the junta, but the whole notional and specious idea of the “Ukraine”. Is the “Ukraine” in its last days? God alone knows… He hasn’t told me the details… nor anyone else, either!
