30 May 2016. For Memorial Day (A Pleasant Service Memory): If You Were in the Service, You KNOW This Stuff… From an Unrepentant SOS Fan

The late great Jeff Smith does Shit on a Shingle (the first four minutes)… I remember him from the 80s and 90s… yes, I know all about him… it’s about cooking, kids…

If you served in the American forces, you know about SOS… Shit On a Shingle… creamed chipped/ground beef or sausage on toast. GOOD EATS, KIDS, I KID YOU NOT. Look here, here, and here for how to make it. There’s a Navy/USMC way and an Army/Air Force way to make it. The Army way is with ground beef/bulk sausage (the USAF came out of the Army, so it uses “Army-style” SOS); the Navy way is with chipped beef (as the USMC is under the Department of the Navy, they use “Navy-style” SOS). Of course, if you want to serve it real chow-line style, you put two pieces of buttered toast on your plate, ladle the SOS over it, and put two over-easy fried eggs on top of that, with a cuppa red-hot Joe on the side. Hey, all you old-school vets… this is the BOMB. I don’t have it as often as I should. Did you mess-cook? If you know what I’m talkin’ about, you’re a real Navy vet (mess-cooking is what they call KP in the Navy).

This is a GOOD service memory for Memorial Day…

On This Memorial Day, Remember REAL Heroes… Holding the Line Against the Forces of Hell

When future historians sit down to write the history of the Syrian conflict there is a simple test that’ll determine whether their objective is to mine and reveal the truth, or whether it’s merely to shovel more dirt onto the mountain of the stuff erected over the course of its five long years as a monument to propaganda. The test will be their depiction of the Syrian Arab Army and its role in the conflict. If said historians credit it with holding the line against the forces of hell committed to the country’s destruction as a secular, non-sectarian, multireligious, and multiethnic state, enduring the kind of losses and casualties placing it among the most courageous, resilient, and heroic of any army of any nation that’s ever existed, then, people will know that truth and not propaganda prevailed.

Glorifying war and conflict is difficult to resist for those living safely many miles away from its horrors and brutality. Those who do glorify it should take a moment to study and imbibe the words of Jeannette Rankin, who said:

You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.

The war in Syria confirms the abiding truth of those words when we consider the epic nature of the destruction it wrought, its tragic human cost, and how it shook Syrian society to the very limits of endurance. By now, it means that whilst Syria’s survival as an independent non-sectarian state may be certain, its ability to recover fully from the earthquake Rankin describes is something that only time will tell. However, the fact the country managed to achieve its survival and, with it, the opportunity to recover is predominately the achievement of the Syrian Arab Army, whose complexion is a microcosm of the very society and people it defends… Sunnis, Shi’ites, Druze, Christians, Alawis, etc. In the process of doing so, as we write these words, it lost over 60,000 men according to the latest report by Robert Fisk, one of the more estimable Western correspondents based in the region. This is without factoring in the 1,000-plus Hizbullah fighters killed, along with Kurds and members of various government-allied militia groups. It also doesn’t include the tens of thousands wounded or maimed.

Nevertheless, just think about this staggering statistic of 60,000 killed for a moment. In a country with a pre-war population of 25 million, and an army numbering in the region of 220,000 at full strength, the loss of 60,000 troops places the epic nature of the conflict in which they perished on a par with the Eastern Front during the Second World War. Of course, Russian aid and solidarity was a key factor in turning the tide of the Syrian conflict. However, all the aid and solidarity in the world amounts little without a people and army’s will to resist the invasion of the country by thousands of extremists whose passions for butchering human beings in the most heinous ways imaginable qualifies their labelling as barbarians.

The salient point lost in the countless columns, reports, and op-eds written and published, equating these barbarians with the Syrian government and its military, is that the Syrian Arab Army and Syrian people are the same; one begins where the other ends and vice versa. The ability and willingness of the army to endure the battering it has, and which no other army in the region could have withstood, is contingent on its support from the Syrian people. This support was constant even in the midst of the huge external pressure arrayed against the country from Western powers that at one point were convinced that the army’s collapse and total defeat was only a matter of when and not if.

The current ceasefire, brokered by Russia and supported by Washington, takes place at a time when the conflict turned emphatically in the government’s favour. During an offensive that began in early February, the SAA smashed its way across northern Syria. Combined with an offensive launched by the multiethnic SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) in northern Aleppo Governorate, it effectively succeeded in encircling Aleppo city and cutting the main supply routes from Turkey to the opposition forces in control of a large part of the city. Given the number of armed factions involved in the conflict, the lack of any central command structure directing its activities, the fact that the ceasefire has thus far held with only a few minor violations is testament to the changed reality on the ground.

The machinations and plotting and mendacity of the Saudis and Turks… not forgetting that of their Western allies… all came to naught in a country where every town and street, every hill, village, and road has been touched by war. In the last analysis, it’s proof that governments, diplomats, or functionaries in palatial staterooms and chancelleries don’t make history. Ordinary men and women willing to fight and die in defence of their people, homes, and communities make it. Their honour in doing so contrasts with the dishonour of those who made the mistake of regarding Syria as just another piece on their geopolitical chessboard. No one should ever underestimate the human cost of protecting Syria’s sovereignty and integrity. Do so and you denigrate those who fell and those who will undoubtedly fall as and when the fighting resumes. Neither should we underestimate the size of the mountain to climb before we can put Syria back together when the guns eventually fall silent. For just as one struggle ends, another will begin.

As They Glorify Our Past Wars This Memorial Day Weekend, Give Some Thought to Our Prospects Against the Russians and Chinese in Any Possible World War III

00 stop the wars! 011115

The Saker reports that Russia prepares for World War III, not because Russia intends to initiate aggression, but because the hubris and arrogance of the West, the demonisation of Russia, provocative military actions by the West, American interference in Chechnya and in former Soviet areas such as the Ukraine and Georgia, and the absence of any restraint from Western Europe on Washington’s ability to foment war alarms them. Like Steven Starr, Stephen Cohen, myself, and a small number of others, the Saker understands the reckless irresponsibility of convincing Russia that the USA intends to attack her.

It is extraordinary to see the confidence that many Americans place in their military’s ability. After 15 years, the USA couldn’t defeat a few lightly armed Taliban, and after 13 years, the situation in Iraq remains out of control. This isn’t very reassuring for the prospect of taking on Russia, much less the strategic alliance between Russia and China. The USA couldn’t even defeat China, a Third World country then, in Korea 60 years ago. Americans need to pay attention to the fact that “their” government is a collection of crazed stupid fools likely to bring vaporisation to the USA and all of Europe.

Russian weapons systems are far superior to American ones. Private companies produce American weapons for the sole purpose of making vast profits. The capability of the weapons isn’t their main concern. There are endless cost overruns that raise the price of US weapons into outer space. The F-35 fighter, which is less capable than the F-15 it’s supposed to replace, costs between 148 million USD (9.79 billion Roubles. 976 million Renminbi. 9.96 billion INR. 194 million CAD. 207 million AUD. 13 million Euros. 102 million UK Pounds) and 337 million USD (22.28 billion Roubles. 2.23 billion Renminbi. 22.67 billion INR. 441 million CAD. 471 million AUD. 304 million Euros. 231 million UK Pounds) per fighter, depending on whether it is an Air Force, Marine Corps, or Navy model. A helmet for a F-35 pilot costs 400,000 USD (26.44 million Roubles. 2.64 million Renminbi. 26.9 million INR. 523,270 CAD. 558,330 AUD. 360,210 Euros. 273,420 UK Pounds), more than a high-end Ferrari and Washington forced or bribed hapless Denmark into purchasing useless and costly F-35s.

It’s entirely possible that nothing more than the greed of the US military-security complex is leading the world to destruction. Delighted that the reckless and stupid Obama régime resurrected the Cold War, thus providing a more convincing “enemy” than the hoax terrorist one, the “Russian threat” is back to its 20th century role of providing justification for bleeding the American taxpayer, social services, and the US economy dry in behalf of profits for armament manufacturers. However, this time, Washington’s rhetoric accompanying the revived Cold War is far more reckless and dangerous, as are Washington’s actions, than during the real Cold War. Previous US presidents worked to defuse tensions. The Obama régime inflated tensions with lies and reckless provocations, which makes it far more likely that any new Cold War will turn hot. If Killary gains the White House, the world is unlikely to survive her first term.

All of America’s wars, except the first… the war for independence… were wars for Empire. Keep that fact in mind as you hear the Memorial Day bloviations about the brave men and women who served our country in its times of peril. The USA has never been in peril, but Washington delivered peril to numerous other countries in its pursuit of hegemony over others. Today, for the first time in its history, the USA faces peril because of Washington’s attempts to assert hegemony over Russia and China.

Washington’s arrogance, hubris, and stupidity don’t impress Russia and China. Moreover, these two countries aren’t Native American Plains Indians, starved into submission by the Union Army’s slaughter of the buffalo. They aren’t the tired Spain of 1898, from whom Washington stole Cuba and the Philippines and called the theft “liberation”. They aren’t small Japan, who spread its limited resources over the vastness of the Pacific and Asia. They aren’t Germany, already defeated by the Red Army before Washington came into the war. They aren’t Granada, Panama, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, or the various Latin American countries that General Smedley Butler said the US Marines made safe for “the United Fruit Company” “some lousy bank investment”.

There’s no future for an insouciant American population preoccupied with selfies and with delusions of military prowess, whilst its crazed government picks a fight with Russia and China.
