The media too often speaks of “light casualties”… that means that some family somewhere is going to receive bad news. On Sunday, 19 June 2016, Naval Infantryman Andrei Timoshenkov died of his wounds in a Syrian hospital. He was a long-service contract serviceman from Kaliningrad Oblast… he was only 28-years-old… he leaves a wife and child to grieve for him. War isn’t glorious in the least… it’s ugly, nasty, and it leaves no one untouched. Sometimes, it’s necessary, but we should never delude ourselves into thinking that it’s anything more than the least-bad solution to a vexing situation. That’s why neoliberalism is evil… whether they call themselves “liberals” or “conservatives”, they’re all the same under the skin… “Us few are going to tell you many what to do, and your sons will die so that ours won’t have to”. Do note that Chilly Hilly and Trump partied together in the past and will do so again in future.
Orthodox Christians… we remember the dead in special ways on the fourth, ninth, and fortieth days of their passing. For Andrei, that’d be 23 June, 28 June, and 29 July. I’d encourage all priests to mention him in the Proskomidi and to serve Pannikhida for him, and for all believers to pray for him on the special days and to light candles to his memory at liturgy. We’re Christians… that’s what we do…
