On the day of your 90th birthday, please, accept my heartfelt congratulations on this significant date. The Lord gave you long life. Over the years, you gained valuable governing experience, you earned great prestige both in your homeland and abroad, and you wrote your name in the annals of Cuban and world history. Largely due to your personal involvement, the Russian and Cuban peoples developed friendly relations. The Russian Orthodox Church is grateful to you for your attention to Orthodox Christians in Cuba and for your help with the construction project of a new church for the parish of the Kazan Wonderworking Icon of the Most Holy Birthgiver in Havana. I have good memories of our meetings, especially, my warm fellowship with you during my visit to “the Island of Liberty” this last February. On this festive day, I wish you bodily health, peace of mind, and help from the Lord on the path of life.

Don’t forget to congratulate Fidel!

The greatest Cuban Comandante, he left an indelible mark in 20th-century world politics. He was a great friend of the USSR, but he was an implacable foe to all American Presidents. The Americans made many attempts on his life… 38 times by Eisenhower, 42 times by Kennedy, 72 times by Johnson, 184 times by Nixon, 64 times by Carter, 197 times by Reagan, 16 times by Bush Sr, and 21 times by Clinton. Castro’s elimination became a kind of obsession for the USA… they used poisoned cigarettes, an Aqualung with TB bacillus in its air-cylinders, and bombs in baseballs, pens, and syringes… just to name a few. A White House memo stated, “Nothing else has more importance; we must invest the money, time, manpower, and effort to do this”. Comandante Fidel himself, commenting on an assassination attempt, once said, “If the ability to survive all these attacks was an Olympic sport, I’d have won a gold medal in it”.
