26 December 2017. In the Beginning Was the Word…


If you were to pin me down and demand that I name my favourite portion of the New Testament, I’d say that it was the Gospel according to St John and the Apocalypse of St John the Theologian. Of course, they have many similarities (they are by the same author, after all)… I’d say that their many levels of meaning make them the most “meaty” sections of the New Testament canon. There’s no doubt that I find the Apostle’s writings fruitful… St Paul is the smith who hammered out many of our most essential doctrines. Nevertheless, there’s something special about St John… I can’t put it precisely… but I’d say that he was more the voice of “revelation” rather than dogmatic dicta.

That’s my opinion, any road… it’s not “what the Church teaches”. Have a care with all those who do claim that they do such… especially, Anglo converts from Evangelicalism or Anglicanism. They usually don’t pass the “smell test”…
