If you were to pin me down and demand that I name my favourite passage in Scripture, this is that.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, said the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
You can see the power of the AV here… no modern translation comes even close to the sheer luminance of the Authorised Version. The only thing that we need do is to modernise the archaic endings… the language itself is a monument and treasure of the English language (in like manner, the Synodal translation into Russian is of similar stature). If you know a person’s favourite Bible passage, it tells you a great deal about their faith and general character. As for me, I’m a believer because I stand in awe before the majesty and sovereignty of our God. I do daresay that I’m not alone in that… I’ll leave judgement of others and whether they’re in Christ’s Church up to the Almighty… I seem to be merely human. Please note that those who do judge others and judge them excluded from Christ’s Church are no better than I am… it does put a certain face on their silly juvenile pretensions, doesn’t it?
By the way, I’ve seen Sutherland’s tapestry hanging in Coventry Cathedral. You MUST see it to appreciate it. The sheer size of it… the way it dominates that part of the sanctuary… it’s one of the great artworks of our time.
