On VDV Day, it seems that this former airborne trooper has his koshka in a VDV telnyashka. A telnyashka is the striped undershirt worn in the Russian forces. Originally, only sailors wore it, but it became more widespread in use starting in the 70s. The navy has black stripes, the VDV have sky-blue stripes, and MVD internal troops have red stripes. In Russia, the telnyashka is a sign of masculinity and military pride.

By the way… VDV, s neba privet means “Airborne! Hi from the skies!”

Today, the Day of the Airborne Troops, DNR Chairman of the Government A V Zakharchenko said that the “Winged infantry” showed unprecedented courage and steadfastness in the Donbass fighting, proving themselves the backbone of the patriot forces, saying, “Today, our paratroops form the backbone of the valiant Donbass patriot forces, of the Republican Guard, and of our officer corps. At this difficult time, when the enemy invaded our land, you proved faithful to your military duty and motherland, being a true exemplar of the courage and fighting spirit of our forces. Paratroops took part in the defence of Donetsk and Gorlovka, they liberated Saur-Mogila, and they surrounded the enemy in the Ilovaisk/Debaltsevo pocket… you proved that so-called impossible tasks were normal. You’re always on guard for your motherland… and victory is your constant companion. I wish you good health, happiness, success in battle, and a tranquil civil life”. The Soviet Airborne Forces formed up on 2 August 1930 in the Moscow Military District near Voronezh. Thus, 2 August is the Day of the Airborne Troops.

Minoborony Big Urged Russian Women to Join the Army

On Friday, Deputy Defence Minister Nikolai Pankov said that more women should serve as long-service personnel in the Russian forces, telling a meeting of Siberian university students, “My personal opinion is that we should see more women in the ranks serving as officers, generals, sergeants, and privates”. He added that such service would be voluntary. Pankov said that 200 women were cadets at various military education establishments in Russia last year; he expects that number to grow in 2014, noting, “We’ve opened admission [for women] even to the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School… and the number of applications is enormous. This goes to show that women want to enter the military profession, so, we shouldn’t ignore it”. According to statistics, 11,000 women are now on military duty, down from 30,000 five years ago due to staff cuts under present military reforms. They serve as officers and NCOs, mainly in staff positions, as specialists in medical and financial services, or in communications units.
