Today, our correspondent on the scene reported that future defenders of the Donbass competed in a boxing tournament in Makeyevka honouring the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. D V Pushilin, the Vice-Chairman of the DNR Peoples Soviet, said, “Our Donbass people have always had the reputation of having enormous fighting spirit; a lot of our boxers won European Championships and World Championships, as our grandfathers won the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. It’s very important to understand and feel the ties between the events that occurred in the distant 1940s and the events that’re happening now. Boxing is a sport that presents a fight where you are one-on-one with your opponent. During a match, you can’t lean on anybody else, for its only you and your opponent in there”. The tournament, held at the gym of the Donbass Academy of Construction and Architecture in Makeyevka, attracted young pugilists from the DNR and LNR. Pushilin said, “Your ancestors won the Great Victory, this is the 70th anniversary of that… this is one of the most important holidays for us. You, our athletes, continue their legacy, gaining victory in the ring in sporting bouts… this is also a fight, but an honest and fair one. I want all of you to have grit, passion, and good luck. To the Holiday!”

Dr Onishchenko is the equivalent of the US Surgeon General. Vladimir Klichko and Aleksandr Povetkin had a well-publicised match in Moscow last week, ending in victory for Klichko, although Povetkin showed much spunk and “heart”. Isaev resigned his posts with the United Russia party after it came out that his assistant Aleksandr Poglazov was kicked off an Aeroflot flight for drunken behaviour and Isayev threatened the cabin crew with dismissal and personal harm.

I had no idea who he was when I first saw him, but there was an aura about him, a presence to this kid that the others lacked… he threw some crazy combinations with a fluid style that blew me away.

Ivaylo Gotzev

One of the Cabineteers was telling me about a young cruiserweight contender from the Rodina named Ismail Sillakh. His dad was from Sierra Leone, and his mum is from the Ukraine; his family was of the educated intelligentsia (his dad’s a doctor). He’s one of us, that’s for certain. He may live in LA at present, but he still boxes for the Ukraine on the international level. He’s gone pro; he’s won the NABF light heavyweight belt. He has a 21-1 record, with 17 KOs. In his only pro loss, Russian Denis Grachyov knocked him out. Ring-savvy Ivaylo Gotzev is his manager, and Shadeed Suluki is his trainer. Standing almost 6-feet-4 (1.93 metres), with the wingspan of a heavyweight, he has a slick and smooth style using intelligent pressure and combinations; many tout him as the next big thing out of Eastern Europe.

Update 20.20 EDT:

Got this in:

He’s a practising Orthodox Christian and although he’s a Ukrainian citizen, he’s not a nationalist nut-job. His nickname is “The Black Russian”. I saw him fight on ESPN. He crosses himself and, after the bout, he puts on a large Russian Soldiers’ Cross. He’s very faithful to Faith, Family, and Rodina. The Ukrainian crackpots hate him because he’s Black, has happy memories of the USSR, sees the Ukraine as one of the Russias, and is a member of the canonical Church.

‘Nuff said… I know it when someone else knows more than I do…
