00 RIA-Novosti Infographics. Latte, Iced, or Mocha. What's Inside Trendy Coffees. 2013

The menus of modern coffee houses are full of obscure names… latte, iced coffee, lungo, ristretto, macchiato. This RIA-Novosti infographic will help you to understand the difference between popular coffee styles in a flash.

Most coffee drinks on offer in restaurants and bistros are based upon espresso. It’s made using special coffee machines… the coffee is brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through finely-ground dark roast coffee. This produces a robust, full-bodied, and aromatic drink. Then, the fun begins. For example, the addition of water makes espresso Americano. If you add foamed milk, it becomes macchiato, cappuccino, or latte. Tossing in some whipped cream creates espresso con panna. If you stir in some ice cream, it gives you an affogato. That’s just the beginning… the barista can experiment and come up with new coffee blends, not using the classic ingredients.

The editors want to thank Olga Orel, Russian-certified Barista Champion, and a leading connoisseur coffee company from Vienna for their help in the creation of this infographic.

RIA-Novosti Presents… “Cat Republic” in St Petersburg: First Cat Café in Russia

Cat Republic in St Petersburg is Russia’s first café where guests can play with cats whilst enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.

******

The café has won well-deserved popularity with children and adults in the two months since it opened not far from St Isaac Square in downtown St Petersburg.

******

Cat Republic currently has eight feline residents.

******

Four of them came from the State Hermitage Museum, where they used to hunt mice. The other four are purebreds acquired from breeders.

******

The main rule of the cat café is that you shouldn’t insist on any interaction that the cat isn’t willing to engage in, because the citizens of the “republic” are free cats.

******

On their first visit, every guest’s height is measured “in cats” with a “cat-meter” and their age is recalculated in “cat years”.

******

Adults visit the café in the evenings; during the day, it’s the local children’s favourite haunt.

******

This cat café in St. Petersburg isn’t only unique in Russia… possibly, in all of Europe. There are similar cafés in Japan, and they’re very popular.

******

Cat Republic’s won popularity as a major city attraction and it’s already a part of the city’s “urban mythology”.

Editor’s Foreword:

Every so often, we need a break from the “bad news” and the “serious”. For instance,  I have a VOR photo-spread on KhK Lokomotiv Memorial Service… good stuff… but “SERIOUS” with a capital “S”. Let’s start the week’s posting with a smile and some lightness. I kid you not… a “cat café”. No… not a caf for cats… a place where people (of the female persuasion, mostly) can have tea and chat amongst the cats. I’d not be against that, I’d rather like it… we have three of the furbies, ourselves. You guys can stop your sour looks (sticking out my tongue)…

Editor’s Afterword:

This is one of the reasons that I fight on… for the good things and for the innocence in the world. Reflect on this… if the smarmy and self-serving hypocrisy of Paffhausen, Bachmann, Lyonyo, Cain, Stokoe, Limbuagh, Perry, Lebedeff, and all the other clericalist/rightwing slimers were to prevail… goodness and innocence would fade away… at least for a time. It’s a thing well-worth fighting for…
